the 3rd party - by din on 21:41 28 Apr 2004
Hi all ..

through the years I've had all sorts of webmastery problems, disasters and general odd things happen. about a month ago another came up. The company that did the hosting for the CGI script that ran the venerable fantasy herald button exchange stopped business. This third party had run the exchange for about 3 years in my keeping and Brad had it before that.

now this falls into a place where for years free services of various types have dried up. but i notice recently that there are a new crop of free things available offered by smaller companies or individuals.

Things are getting cheaper, like bandwidth and server space. webmasters are more savy with services (i've moved the fh-bx entirely to my virtual server, the banner exchanging part and all)

Now there is a ease to having a third party webcounter or banner exchange host .. but there is always some sort of flux going on with many of them. or at the worst you go to log in like i did and get a 'we're closed, good luck' page.

I wasn't sure where this post is supposed to be going other than I had a thought to warn and relate. ... and i have to stop by occasionally to make sure you all haven't broken anything :p ...

The dot com bust in 2001 pretty much turned me off free third party hosted services.  I think nearly all the ones I used to use, besides Bravenet, are now gone.
