gah, hosting rant - by din on 23:16 13 Mar 2003
i've been working on a new website for a couple weeks now, or maybe more, and i've been having trouble with my host, more trouble than i should be having, so far nearly everything that has come up has been resolved and the other things i've used my blazing intellect  :p  to overcome.

this hosting company now is in the midst of changing the software that is used to manage aspects of the site. I was just in the middle of testing a new program when everything started coming up 404. for a moment i though the server had bleached me .. but my ftp program was still showing the files were where I put them, correct permission and all that. .. the default 'we will have a site here soon' homepage was showing also.

what had happened was the server's WWW document root had changed. .. if anybody needs me to expalin this i could, but not while i'm ranting :) .. essentually all the files that were accessable to the web are now in the wrong place on the server so when apache goes where it is now being told they are there is nothing there. if this isn't just a snafu or i can't get the .conf changed back .. it is one line in a configuration file that is likely changed .. i would have to re-upload some 30MBs of website and set-up a couple programs again.

I'm sticking with the host at least until my terms up with them at which time i'll prolly move to where i have timelines at and i'm waiting until morning before i file a trouble ticket. compared to the woes of searchking this past year it is really a minor thing, at least i /know/ what is going on.
