Witch Hunter Robin - by Arislyn on 08:00 15 Aug 2003
I downloaded an anime music video last night featuring Witch Hunter Robin and, from the clips I saw, it looked good. I'm just curious if anyone has seen it and your opinions on it.

Since Adult Swim started airing Witch Hunter Robin recently, I've begun watching it and I find that I am enjoying it. However, I have a question.

I'm a bit fuzzy on why the core group of characters hunt witches in the first place. Are they only hunting criminal witches or all witches? It seems a bit unclear to me. Couple this with the fact that everyone on the core team of witch hunters are also witches themselves and I find myself scratching my head quite a bit at the logic and motivations of the characters.

Maybe I just missed an episode/scene somewhere that explains this.....

Not quite sure.

I think they hunt witches that commit crimes using witchcraft. That drainer guy with the insects, the painter girl, even the tripping guy. However, the reason hasn't been really spelled out.

Two things of interest have been mentioned:
1. Robin comes from far away, I believe she is from a land of witches. She is from a monastery there, and presumably was trained to control her powers as well as hunt witches.

2. The witches are a different race. That is all that has been explained, not whether they are alien, fantastic, or just a genetic offshoot.

Robin is the only witch on the team itself. Part of the support crew is that one woman, who I assume is a witch, but is definitely a psionic. She reads emotions that people have had from objects they've owned/touched. I don't know much else about her. She's the woman Robin keeps having tea with.

Most of the characters so far are pretty nebulous. So much so that Robin is only name I know. I call the others Quiet Guy, Not-so-quiet Guy, Hacker Guy, Angry Girl, Mind Woman, and Boss.

I haven't seen all of the episodes as they've come on, but I'm prettys sure that Robin's the only witch on staff. The two guys both use the special anti-witch liquid rounds in their guns, as does the Angry Girl.

I don't think that the explanatory episode has happened yet. I know there's something about Quiet Guy that hasn't been said yet, he's just too observant and quiet for there not to be some kind of loss or something in his life.

Hacker Guy got explained: he got caught delving into a top secret database. He thought it was something normal, next thing he knew agents were knocking down his doors and windows. He got given the ultimate ultimatum: Join or Die. He chose join. Be on the lookout for his necklace. From something he said I think it is a tracker/killswitch.

Just trying to be helpful!

Hehe! I'm glad I'm not the only one watching this. :)

I don't know. I'm thinking that most of the people on the team are witches, except for Hacker Guy and maybe Angry Girl. I was operating under the impression that psionics and witchcraft were kind of interchangeable, ya know? So, I lumped Mind Woman into the "witch" category.

Also, I know at one point that when Robin was talking to Quiet Guy, she said something like, "What is your power? You always look like you're using a gun. Maybe you just haven't Awakened yet."

Oh, yeah! I know what made me assume that Not-So-Quiet Guy was a witch, too. On the episode with the guy who drained witches powers to keep himself alive and essentially ageless, he attacked Not-So-Quiet guy and NSQ Guy reacted to it. I would assume that if you had no powers to drain, that you wouldn't react.

Hmmmm.....Curiouser and curiouser.

I haven't seen all the epsiodes yet, either. They come on late enough that I'm normally headed to bed and it's a toss up as to whether I'm feeling perky enough to stay awake. However, I think I have two or three episodes waiting for me on TiVo. Maybe one of those episodes has a bit more of an explanation about the team itself, why they were formed, their ultimate purpse, etc.

Ah! I didn't even catch that Hacker Guy may, literally, have a collar. I was thinking they were speaking in a metaphorical sense. I'm going to watch closely this time and see.....And, yeah. That would make perfect sense if it is a killswitch. Hacker said that he can't go anywhere without the boss's permission....

Cool beans! Thanks, Luke. :)

So, are you actually enjoying the show or are you just sort of intrigued by it, right now?

Intrigued, when I do manage to catch it.

So far, and note that I like you have missed episodes, I haven't been hit with a hook.

If I'd noticed the "mayber you haven't Awakened yet" that might have sunk a hook in a little way, but mainly I just feel blah about it.

It doesn't offend me to watch it, it just hasn't made me WANT to watch it. I mainly see it just because it comes on after a show I do watch.

The characters all seem a little bland. Robin MIGHT be interesting, but the show tries to put too much on visuals, without narrative flow. You get quite a few scenes with Robin staring at tea, or Hacker Guy saying something nebulous and then he and Robin sit for 3 seconds. That kind of thing puts me off. I'm not asking for action in terms of blowing things up, but I would like action in terms of moving the plot forwards.

The characters seem like stock. Quiet Guy looks like he has a haunted past, NSQ Guy is trying to live up to something, Hacker is a hacker (which is to modern cliche as ninjas were to the 80s), and Angry Girl is just angry, not mad or furious.

Your impressions as to them all/most being witches might be so, that's what I expected before the series was far in, but with no current info...As for the mental woman, she's probably a witch I just haven't seen it say that specifically, so I'm leaving open that she might not be and that other powers might exist. No reason to believe that, I suppose, I just do in case.

Which is another problem, the powers are all so nebulous. Half the witches show up and get beaten without us ever knowing what there power IS. Like the painter girl, I guess she was using invisible ranged attacks of some kind, like telekinetic darts. But I don't KNOW anything about it.

It seems so...intentional, like the creators were going, "Okay, and we aren't going to explain ANYTHING so as to keep the watcher/reader guessing." Rather than introducing new and interesting stuff they just introduce a new special effect. There seem to be no limits to witchcraft. Which makes it so limitless that it comes off as boring.

Like the Silver Surfer. He can do pretty much anything. He is boring and only shows up to fight other overly boring and powerful galactic-level entities. Peter Parker? Good at the few things he can do, but NOWHERE near as powerful. He has thousands of comic appearances under his belt and has fought everything from street thugs to Magneto(Spidey was WAY outclassed).

All in all, I'm willing to occasionally watch the series to see if anything interesting happens. If I'd bought the first DVD I don't think I'd have ever bought the second.

You've hit the nail on the head with that description. The main reason that I am watching it is because I am waiting for an explanation. It's enjoyable, in its own fashion, but it's not something that I would highly recommend. I find it neither terribly good nor terribly bad. Mainly, I'm just curious as to where it's going. I want to know if there is more to it or if this is it. If this is all there is to it, I'm going to be a bit disappointed.

I think the fact that neither one of us can remember any of the character's names except for Robin's says a lot, in and of itself.

Although, I am amused by the Boss's Hitler mustache. Hey, it's the little things that make a show like this. :p

I really don't think I can add anymore to what you've already said. You've summed it up well. *smiles*
