WebRing add yet another feature - by CorellianRogue on 00:45 03 Aug 2002
Webring has introduced a new feature that allows webmasters to choose an option of having only one navbar show up in thier SSNB stack. Surfers going around the ring will only see the navbar they're surfing, with a link to the entire stack.

It is being touted as a great way to trim load times for sites with huge stacks, and it does just that. As a result, I've seen a huge jump in ring applications (but that could be a coincidence).

I don't really like this one. For one thing, it is not flawless. If you're just surfing a site, and not a specific ring, you may see the SSNB stack as one navbar with a link to the entire stack back on WebRing... Which leads to the second reason why I don't like this option. IMHO, it's an attempt to get more traffic for the host.

I can't really begrudge that. WebRing is trying to make some money, and they have every right to do so.

As a ringmaster, this may be one more thing I'll have to keep an eye on. For example, many of the webmasters in my rings have thier own webring. I've already figured out a way to manipulate the system to only show my rings, regardless off what ring you're surfing. I'm not the brightest bulb in the box, so others will figure it out, too.

I don't like the sound of this one at all. To me when I am surfing, I always liked a decent site where several rings all intersected.  Sometimes I'd jump to a different ring.  It was great to explore this way.

Also if it can be manipulated it will.  Thanks for lettting us know.
