Got a quick question....

I was checking out my tracker this evening and found out that someone, somehow got to my site from a porn site. *ponders* Now, I really don't think that D&D is the sort of thing that most porn sites link to, so I went and checked the place out to see.

I couldn't find a link anywhere to my site. (For which I am rather relieved, to be honest). I even viewed their source and did a search for my addy in there, just in case it was hidden somewhere and I didn't notice it.

Now, the only thing I can think of is someone got stuck in a frame and went to another site which then linked to me. But, since they were in a frame, it wouldn't show the correct referring addy.....?

The thing is, I've got 2 links from this source. So, I'm a little confused...

It could be ghosting.  What your tracker is picking up is the last site they were on before they went to your site.  Perhaps with a bookmark.  It happens occasionally.

How bizarre! I didn't realize that could happen. Thanks, Brad. :)

i was just going through my server logs for November and it brought back to mind a thing i had discovered a couple months ago .. It seems that some clever individuals have written programs that hit your webpages and leave as false referrals websites that have paid for this logfile advertising.

For a fee you can have your website placed in the referral logs of 10,000 websites (this is one claim i read through, which i think is entirely possible)

The people using this advertising primarily target webmasters who check their logs, usually be webmaster resource sites or even the people running the false referral program themselves ..

in this advertsing they also claim link popularity because some sites publish there logs files in some form, though i haven't really seen a lot of that myself.

din, Haru, "Fluffy" and I will patrol the parimeter.  Don't open the gates to anyone until we get back.

If you see a spammer turn em into a newt.
