The world is getting smaller. Perhaps it is time for webmasters of content sites to appeal to a non-English speaking audience. You can offer free translation of your webpages using AltaVista's Babel Fish.

That's an excellent suggestion, Brad. I've noticed that I get hits from a wide variety of countries and could probably do a better job of keeping these visitors at my site if there is a convenient translation service right there on the page.
It keeps them from having to search for one.

not to discourage any tool, or to sound english-speaking centric ..
but people who are viewing english sites habitually and do not speak the language would already have such a tool on their end. particularly with the degree (though shrinking, i would think) of english sites over non-english even on foriegn server.
on the other hand my timelines site gets a good deal of traffic from overseas versions of google, and i've found my site listed on a few non-english pages and i'm sure that opens the possiblity of people who do not speak the langauge i present my content in to be visting my site.
any other thoughts ?

Well, my thought is, what can it hurt to have the service offered on your page? Sure, they may already have something like that at their end, but it seems like a good idea to me to have your bases covered, just in case they don't.
However, there may be some negatives to it that I'm not seeing. What are the pros and cons to this?

I don't see any cons. A year ago Ring Codex, my Tolkien directory got mentioned in a Russian online magazine and a couple of blogs, suddenly I was getting tons of hits from Russia. I can't assume that they all knew they were clicking through to an english language site.
I can write, but a don't always carry around a pen. Heck half the time I can't find where I put stuff! But if I have the translation thingy right there on the page maybe the non-English speakers won't run off so quick. Or maybe they know some English but are unsure of one or two words.
I'm thinking of putting this on my directory pages. I think some people would use it to read site titles and descriptions.

Okay, it would not have helped in the Russian thing, but I do get a fair amount of hits from Argentina, Brazil and France, so I don't see a downside really provided you have room on the page.

hehe , brad stole my backup point .. the space. i was thinking, and still am, amoung a bunch of other things, about putting this or another translation service on my pages. but i haven't really figured out where i'm going to put it. I don't really have one main entry page so things like that i'm almost obligated to place on all the pages ... somewhere.
i'm going through a minor rediesign of some things at my timelines site right now .. so i'll see if i can steal a few pixels from some place

Yeah, I have to admit, that graphic is a bit big. It would be nice if they just had a text link that you could slip in somewhere.
I ended up just putting it on my entry page with that little group o' graphics near the bottom. I don't think it's too obtrusive there and I don't plan on putting it on every page. That seems a bit much.

It looks cool translated. At least somebody coming to your main page can tell what it is about.
I think this will be my project for tomorrow -- adding that to the directory pages of PD. I don't think it can hurt.
