Howdy folks.

I'm trying to track down a story, and cannot recall either the title or author.  I believe it is of novella length.

The premise is an experiment to determine the true potential of humans.  The method invloves isolating human infants on a preserve, where they are tended by robot nannnies, carefully programmed to raise the children without "contaminating" them with any preconceived notions about human limitations.  The experiment is a success, with the children developing mental abilities that eventually scare the adults.

Anybody out there run across this one?  Many thanks for any help you can offer.

Welcome to the forums! :) Come on in and make yourself at home.

I'm afraid that one isn't ringing any bells for me. Anyone else?

I'm not getting anything for that story either..  Sounds rather intriguing, though.  Unfortunately I'm quite familiar with SF published say before the 80s and less familiar since.  I still read some SF but tend to read more fantasy and horror these days, which is most of what I write.

Sorry, it is not ringing a bell for me either.

If it was a novella it might have been published in a magazine.  You might try hunting down a index of Asimov's or Analog for a start.

Thank you, Arislyn, for the warm welcome.

Actually, Kainja, I believe this story is at least 20 years old.  Unfortunately, I suspect it wasn't very popular.  The very idea of separating newborns from their parents probably was repellant to many.

In reply to Brad's suggestion, I'll give that a try.

I seem to recall this story from a paperback collection - a Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume ??? - if memory serves.  Perhaps I can find listings for such collections online ...

I've been scouring my personal library, but have had no luck so far.  What makes this  doubly frustrating is I know I owned a copy of this story at one time.  I guess I've put off cataloging my library too long ...    :)
