ABC is working on a revival of the early 1970's horror series Kolchak: The Night Stalker accourding to this news report.
For those of you that have never seen the made for TV movie, The Night Stalker and the later short lived but excellent series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. Unfortunately, any new series won't have the excellent Darren McGavin to play the lead. He is a hard act to follow because he was perfect for the role in this cult classic.

Yeah they ran these as reruns for awhile. There was very little speculative fiction on TV back then and it got little respect from the suits. This show was pretty much paved the way for The X-Files and Darren McGavin even guest starred on a couple of X-Files episodes. I think The Night Stalker had a lot of influance on X-Files creator Chris Carter.

I too remember this series with great fondness, and McGavin was perfect as the rumpled reporter.

Din and I ran across this the other day on DVD: Night Stalker/Night Strangler (not an affiliate link). That is a double feature DVD of the two made for TV movies that preceeded the TV series. As I remember them they were both excellent. Anyway that is a pretty good price for two movies.

I watched the DVD listed above over the weekend. Both movies are good. The Night Stalker has some very good suspence and a decent cast. Being the first it has some of the feel of a prototype but the script is still pretty tight. I thought they did outstanding work given the low budget.
The Night Strangler the second movie, has a more polished feel. There is more humor to it and this is where Darren McGavin's portrayal of Carl Kolchak really comes alive - nobody can protest-babble better than Kolchak. They are definitely feeling more comfortable with the characters and it shows. Great cast! Much higher budget and it shows in the sets and location shoots.
Both movies are very clear on the DVD and at that price it is a good deal.
It will be very hard for any other actor to play Carl Kolchak other than Darren McGavin.
