The Monster that Challenged the World (1957) - by Brad on 15:08 02 Feb 2004
Movie: The Monster that Challenged the World (1957). Is one of the better 1950's B-movies of the atomic monster genre. It stars an aging Tim Holt (The Treasure of Sierra Madre) as a Navy Commander investigating the deaths of several sailors at a naval lab on the Salton Sea in California. It turns out that an earthquake has opened up a crack in the floor of the sea and exposed prehistoric snail-like mollusks to radiation thus growing them to giant size. And they are hungry for human blood and set to escape the sea and spread throught the world!
Hans Conried plays a wonderful role as the lab's scientist. Tim Holt looks a little old for his role but he brings in a more touching and human performance for all that. And the rest of the cast perform surprisingly well and the script is well written with attention to details, even down to Holt's secretary constantly talking to her mother on the phone.
This is one of the better atomic monster B-movies available and the film print is nice an clear on this DVD. The acting, script and direction put it as a high class, although B, sci-fi monster flick. If you collect atomic monster movies then this is one to get. It is packed with 1950's "superior monster action" and "mollusk mayhem" for popcorn eating thrills.
Starring: Tim Holt, Audrey Dalton, Hans Conried.
Directed by: Arnold Laven
