The Hulk - by Kainja on 00:54 23 Jun 2003
Wondering if anyone had seen the The Hulk yet?  My son and his girlfriend and I went to see it today.  I won't give anything away but I'll say it wasn't as good as I had hoped, or as it could have been.  The first half of the movie was pretty slow moving actually.  I'll be interested in other's take on the movie

Kainja, I have not seen it.  Sounds like I might wait, and rent it on DVD.

I wonder if there is a generational difference?  What was your son's and his girlfriends reaction too it?

My son, who is 15, thought it was decent but not great.  His girlfriend wasn't really into it.

I think it takes itself too seriously.  I remember the telly series from when I was littlle, and it was so over the top, and therefore ridiculous, that only a comedy could have lived up to it.....

well I'm 18 and saw it with a group of friends, There were mixed reactions. my comic booker friends loved it my other friends found it slow and anti-climatic. my opinion is that while the last fight scene left something to be desired, and it took a while for the action to get moving, the cinematography was excellent, they used a segmented screen effect repeatedly that gave the film a very comic book feel. The panels and the way they showed action from diffrent angles and still unified everything. Made for a very cool feeling movie, but as an action movie fan it could have been much better.
Daredevil is still my favorite superhero movie, with X2 high on my list.

I'll post my review that I gave it at my diary:

I went and saw HULK tonight. It was good. Surprisingly good. I went in with high hopes for it, based simply on the fact that the Hulk is one of my favorite characters. And, despite what many people probably think, the movie is not and action movie. Granted, it does have some action... some that had me squirming, tbh, because I wanted to laugh and jump with happiness. There was something absolutely awesome about seeing the Hulk come alive... much like I felt with the small scene with Collossus during X-2.

But I digress...

About 90% of the movie is character driven. Much like the comic book itself, the movie is truly about Banner, and what terrible events in his childhood did to the psyche of a small child.

Now, this is not to say that it followed the comic book exactly. It did not. But, the incidents in the movie can be drawn directly parallel to those in paper form.

I, personally, really liked it.

The relationship between Banner and his love, Betty... (who, btw, is a quite stunning brunette)... woe to any who would seek to harm her. His relationship with General Ross was perfect... and you can see how the General is torn between wanting to destroy the Hulk, and feeling pity for him.

Btw, if you go see it, look for the scene near the beginning with Stan Lee and Lou Ferrigno... priceless. That was a nice touch, and, dare I say, a nice gesture to ol' Ferrigno (who, if you don't know, played the Hulk on the tv series).

Anyways, there are plenty of times to root for the Hulk, and I was duly impressed with the CGI. I'd heard many people say that it was very fake looking (before the movie came out), but as you're watching it, never once does it feel "fake" or "painted". You can see where they went through tremendous trouble to make the Hulk as real as possible.

There's a lot more I could say about this movie. It managed to keep my attention the whole way through, and I might go see it again.

EL and I went to see it, and he had told me that it was much more drama than action movie. While that may make it not as appealing to the teens and the younger folk, it fits the concept of the book very well for those who are older. Besides, I love some of the more driven comics now. Watchmen, anyone? That book certainly wasn't action-packed, but it told a story.

That is what HULK does. Tells a story. Now, I do believe that they will have a sequel. That movie should be much more action-oriented, as the origin "issue" is out of the way.

I think that people really into the comic will like it, while those who are expecting a "Hulk smash!" movie will be disappointed.

I want a sequel
Hulk vs. Abomination and maybe get The Leader in on it, maybe The Leader controlling Abomination.
