The Eye - by Arislyn on 07:25 01 Nov 2004
We rented The Eye last night in hopes for a good, scary movie. While it turns out that neither Runt nor I found it scary, it's still an interesting film that easily held our attention.
The basis of the story is that a woman who has been blind since the age of two regains her sight after a cornea transplant. However, she begins to see things that no one else sees....ghosts. This is the tale of her trying to resolve what she is seeing and why she is seeing it.
When Runt and I rented this, we were really hoping for a good, creepy story that would have the hair standing up on the back of our arms. However, there just wasn't much beyond the occasional sighting of ghosts who were mostly pretty bland. There were a couple of ghosts that made me take notice in their intensity, though. There was no blood and gore, just a lot of emotion behind these two instances.
Mostly, I just liked the story because it was well done. You find yourself getting sucked into Mun's world as she struggles to come to terms with what is going on. The fun thing about the film is that a lot of the time is spent showing us things from Mun's (the main character) point of view, so we sometimes have a hard time telling what is supposed to be there and what isn't as her eyes and brain aren't quite in synch yet, making the world a fuzzy, blurry place full of faceless people.
So, the verdict from my little corner is: not scary, but still a good movie.

I also enjoyed "The Eye" without finding it terribly scary. I think there were a few eerie parts, when the blind girl can't see some of the weird things going on around her. It certainly wasn't as effective as "Ringu."
In other news, my son has now seen both "The Grudge" and "Saw." He didn't like "THe Grudge" at all, referring to it as a "Ring" ripoff without the scare. He thought "Saw" was quite a bit better.
