Test the microportal - by CorellianRogue on 15:26 03 Apr 2003
I created this thing I call a microportal. I'm not sure it's very useful, but it's fun to play around with. It's essentially a table nested in an IFRAME.
It's really touchy. I'm not sure how it will interact with other browsers or settings.

Let me know how it works for you.
Oh, I almost forgot. It can be placed on any webpage with a small script for the IFRAME.

looks good in moz 1.3, opera 7.something . and k-meleon .7 on winXP 800x600, it seems stable enough ..
there might be css to make the scrollbar more narrow. for the smaller sizes some extra pixels may help.
that is a great idea. i think it could be pretty handy in general promotion. if you want and when you want let me know and i could stick some of the cutn'paste code on the fantasy herald resource page.
will you have a formal way for people to include sites?

Hi, din,
Nothing formalized yet. I'm looking into the CSS, and there's some whacky DHTML scripts I'm playing with that will allow you to drag the microportal around a page.
I suppose that anyone who puts the microportal on thier site should be able to submit a site. That's an easy form to make. My intention was to just put PD community sites and webmaster resources in it. And some resources from some other sites I've got. But, what the hey, it can be opened up.

CR this is very cool! It seemed stable on Safari browser. I'm having trouble with my ISP so I test it some more later.
Excellent stuff!

I works okay on most modern browsers, but I would never rely on it 100%. I've made some drop-down menus with it, but you actually have to put in a "backup" html menu; not really worth the effort when you're short on online time.

Okay, I added a "get code" page and a submission form directly in the microportal.
The submission was a little tricky; there were "time out" errors that would make the microportal useless, no matter how many times you reloaded the page it was on. Also, there was a bug that would freeze up IE, but didn't manifest in AOL. I think that's taken care of.

Hey CR,
I hope you don't mind, I just listed your microportal page at both Planet Doom and Scifimatter.
We can see if webmasters go for it.

Thanks, both of you. This thing is really fun to play with, even if it is the hardest work I've done recently. My goal is to have the microportal exist only as a button on hosts, and not have a home page or sign-up form.
One thing that's kind of strange about it, is using the browser back and forward buttons will take you through your history on the microportal, up to the point where you began surfing it or left it.

This thing is turning out to be more diverse than I thought. I dropped the code right into a WebRing navbar, and it works perfectly on all the sites on the ring. Now I'm really dangerous.

Neither did I. After I play with this some more, I can actually build a ring around the portal. Larger rings turn out to be more like indexes because of the complexities of surfing them. Okay, now I can put the index right in the navbar.
