Heh! Be glad you've never had to deal with leet. It's a pain in the butt. :P
Leet ("Elite") started out as a hacker language that was used to code words so that "The Man" would have a hard time understanding. Pure leet is comprised of numbers and symbols. For instance, the word leet would be "|33+" or something to that effect.
It used to be a sign of being in the know, of being..well...elite. However, it has devolved into a sort of mix of leet and AOL speak (chat room shorthand), turning it into something of a joke amongst most people. Now, it's most commonly used either jokingly among friends or as an insult to another person.

My boyf has a Leet T-shirt. I should know what it says by now but every time he wears it I have to ask. I just cant seem to ever see D4 as "the" (really "da" I suppose, as in "fight da man").
