I'm working on a script where have to put in a maximum story length in characters, not words. Roughly, characters equals bytes.
Do any of you guys know how long a decent novella or longish short story is in characters?

80 - 120K Novella isn't really well-defined. I consider "Heku" and "Wharfling Castle" novellas, but get arguments from other authors, most of whom call them (Heku) a long short story, and (Wharfling Castle) a novellette.
80K is pushing it as a short. Most are no more than half that.

Thanks Admiral. I had to set an upper limit on the new interactive story script. If I don't, sure enough, somebody will come along and try to crash the script by posting War and Peace.
If somebody needs more space they can always start a Part II etc.
