Anyone watch it?

Stargate SG-1 - by Brad on 10:18 26 Jul 2003
Not having cable makes for a gigantic blind spot for me. TV Guide magazine has a big write-up this week on Stargate SG-1.  Much to my surprise the show is around 10 years old and I was only vaguely aware that there was/had been a show by that name!

I also found out that it is a major hit show in Europe with conventions, etc., while being something of a sleeper here in the US.

So my questions for the panel:

1. Do you or have you watched it?
2. Is it any good?
3. What do you like/dislike about it?

I just searched through my local broadcast TV listings and it looks like one of the secondary stations is showing reruns at midnight and 3:30 PM.  I suppose I can set my VCR.  I'm wondering if it is worth it or should I start watching it from the beginning in order or skip it?

1. Do you or have you watched it?
I now watch it all the time on sci-fi. Originally it conflicted with B5 locally, so I opted for B5. Sci-fi channel has been running it... alot. I have managed to catch all the episodes I have missed over the years.

2. Is it any good?
Yes. It started a bit slow, but it came together faster that STNG (or any ST show).  There is generally fairly good characterization, dialog, and acting.  The special effects are not skimpped on, nor are they the center of the show.  Each year/ season has a meta story arc, with its own big threat. It is reminicent of B5 that way.

3. What do you like/dislike about it?
I like the "grounded" quality to all the characters.  They are realistic givens their backgrounds. The military people act like real military people. All the characters, they are quirky without being eccentric, like real people.

I like the mythology of the show.  The backstory and lore of the Gaoaluld, The Asgard, and everyone else is all consistant, logical, and applied layer, by layer.  They have built up a solid foundation for stories to be told.  And it is maintained rigorously. No writer can get away with a "cheat" to continuity or back story, like ST writers have done.

The science is always consistant with a minimum of Star Trekesk Technobabble.  You can tell they are listening to their science advisors.

The only thing I personally disliked was the writing out and writing back in of Daniel Jackson's Character.  The writers had finally managed to get Jonas Quinn (Daniels replacement) right. It took them almost an entire season to make him more than a cipher for Daniel.  Then they wrote him out in a few episodes when the Actor playing Daniel came back.  This is season 7-8 for you those not in the know.

One thing that might be hard for new people joining the show is the deep mythology/ background.  There is a great deal to absorb to fully understand some episodes.  Other episodes are totally newbie friendly.  It is very much like Babylon 5 that way.  It is not a show to just "drop in on".  You need to watch a number of them, in sequence, to really understand everything (because they briefly back explain certain things each episode... so you can pick things up).  It is, however, well worth doing.

Thanks for that reply Moonhunter.  It sounds like I should either rent or buy the show on DVD and watch in sequence.  But it sounds like it is worth getting into.

I might try to tape it this fall if there are no other scifi shows being broadcast.

I agree with all that Moonhunter said, but also I love that its not too Dark and the humour in it means you can watch it whatever mood your in.  Its a good post work relax show.

And a main character is McGuyver!!!

Say now, you three have been holding out on me.   :D

Here you have been enjoying a good scifi show and not letting ole Brad in on it.   :p

Thanks for the reviews.  This looks like one I will have to investigate.

We forget that you are cable impaired and don't live in a major TV market (I have 19 local broadcast channels for example).

You can just jump in, if you check out the fan sites with episdoe gudines.
http://www.stargate-sg1.com/home.html   for example.

Thanks Moonhunter that will help me get caught up with the story line.  I think I will start taping the syndicated reruns being broadcast here at midnight.  Especially since it looks like pretty thin pickings for SF on the networks this Fall.

UK terrestrial TV has been really good at picking up Sci-Fi shows.  We've had Stargate and Farscape and all the StarTreks really quite quickly after cable shows them.  Means now I've got cable I'm watching episodes from all different series.  Confusing....

I watched Stargate SG-1 and it was pretty good.  Good enough that I'm going to watch some more episodes and see how it goes.  I never once got that, "What were they thinking?" feeling of incredulitiy I get with so many new scifi shows - a good sign.  It looks like it has a lot of promise and I'm looking forward to seeing more.

These may well be a few seasons behind Scifi Channel, I'm not sure.

Saw the movie well-before the series came out.  Very believable to me except the idea of the U.S. Air Force having a Special Forces-type outfit.  (Maybe they do, but hey, I'm Army).   :D

Finally have cable and catching up as I can.  Kinda limited, considering the hours I work.
