Wanted to know if any of you lot have seen any of this series and could recommend/pan it. Im very attached to the original Stargate characters and Im afraid that the programme makers are gonna go all ultra sci-fi in this new series and forget why we liked the old one (the great "nerdy liberal, clever woman, stoic alien, wise-cracking soldier" combo).

I've watched a few episodes, but it hasn't sucked me in the way SG1 did. (Though, I have to admit that I adore SG:A's astrophysicist. Can't say I'd like him in real life, but as a character he's a riot.)
I think my husband summed up the series best when he said that it boils down to episodes of the SG:A team breaking bad news to aliens, ticking them off and them scuttling away before anyone gets damaged too badly.
I'm probably giving nothing away here, since the first big plot gets rolling in the first or second episode but, just in case....it's spoiler hiding time! Just highlight to read.
You see, the SG Team wake up a nasty, mostly inactive alien race in their quadrant that everyone had been either hiding from, tip-toeing around or plotting to destroy while the majority of them hibernated. Now, they get to go around and tell the people, "Oh, yeah...that race that eats your kind and who had been mostly inactive for the past few years? Well....we kinda poked 'em in the face with a stick and now they're upset. Our bad."

I really liked SG1, and I'm goin to watch the new season (#8) tonight at 8:00 (05/10/04). Whats the deal with O'Neil? He's frozen or something isn't he?

Would someone please just send the replicators in to Gould space, please. If they are wiping out the Asgaard (sp?whatever) and immune to the Gravity of blackholes suddenly then surely they could be used as an excelent weapon (while we cower wondering how to get away from them ourselves).
By the way the hidden text made me LOL. Very reprasentative of stupid humans actions in general - "hmm there's a delicate situation that needs careful handling, lets blunder in there and smash stuff"

Have just watched the first episode of this series. I liked it at the begining was getting in to it then suddenly they tried to pack loads in a really rushed way. I know they are trying to establish a whole new situation, and new baddies are a good way to hook people but it seemed messy. Everything happened with remarkable ease "successfull worm hole - breathable atmos, lets go. Uh-oh gonna die here dial up a random place, it worked, another breathable atmos, lets go. Oooh helpfull indigenous peeps speaking ENGLISH, how nice! Ooh some baddies..." at this point I kinda lost interest (even though i like baddies) cos I didn't care if they lived or died.

I thought the first episode was good, and that it was at the right pace for a first episode as it is important that a lot is in the first few episodes to attract an audience. Some areas were humorous and the Atlantis digital animation was really cool. Characters seem alright, but that new "leader" guy seems a little bit similar to O'Neil.

There were some humerous points, you're right. That pilot guy suddenly discovering he has ancient DNA was quite good. I think I'll just have to watch more before I decide how I feel.
