Spamming Confusion? - by Lucius on 12:18 21 Mar 2003
Hello there,
new member here, arrived via the Expanding Universe Webring.
I have a site with a free dark fantasy fiction novel on it which I would like to announce like an invitation to those who like that kind of thing to come over and take a look.
Is that considered spamming???

Hi Lucius, welcome to the forums.
Thanks for asking!
Here is what I suggest:
1. Login to your control panel here at the forums and add your site URL to your profile.
2. In addition you can add a signature to your profile.
3. Then join us and participate in the forums discussion. Lurkers and forums members will check out people that make posts that they find interesting. Long term you will get a lot more traffic that way then by a one shot post.
4. Finally, you ought to check out the Planet Doom Search Engine Submission Guide and add your site to all the directories you find there. Many of those are proven powerhouse traffic generators. It's all free!
Do those things and you will get some good traffic for your site!
(And we love to have people participate here in the forums.)

Well thanks guys. I guess the definition of spamming and news these days is that just everything is spamming - :-(
Hmmm ... which explains how I feel about the news in general.
Ok [perks up] so I shall strive for quality contributions instead.
Strive for being the operative word there.

Well, no...*smiles* We have things set up the way they are in order to discourage people from joining the board and posting a one time, self-promotional ad.
You see, there are newsgroups and websites out there which are set up for the sole purpose of handing out URLs of boards and other websites so that people can "spam" them. If we were to allow ourselves to be seen as a spam friendly site, we could well end up listed at one of these places. It would be no time at all before we were overrun by one hit wonders and we would have nothing worth actually reading here.
Like Brad said, though, you'll actually end up getting far more hits to your site by putting the addy in your signature and profile. That way, your site actually shows up each and every time you post! See....far more exposure that way than just posting once and then having it disappear after 30 days.

Oh! I forgot to tell you....Haru and I run an RPG blog and, of course, RPG sort of bleeds into fantasy for us. *smiles* If you want to PM either of us with a blurb about your novel, we'd be happy to post it at our other site.

Hey thank you, that is really kind of you.
I must admit, I'm kinda new to "this side of the internet". Never been involved with a RPG and although I have heard of blogging I haven't a clue what it is! LOL. Used to write technical manuals until I got fed up, decided to starve to death and write fiction instead so it's all really new to me.
But I'm a fast learner. And I really appreciate your (all of you!)friendliness and support. Shall do from my end what I can to contribute to this community.
Thanx,
L.

We have a little bit of everything going on here. General SF and Horror plus forums about RPG's and boards which have active RPG games and also stories serialized from them. All good fun. Welcome, just pitch in.
