Runt and I rented this movie over the weekend and..well....weren't that impressed by it. In fact, we ended up fastforwarding through the first half hour or so just to get to the parts where the story starts to come together. It was slooooooow. 2001 kind of slow. I ended up napping on and off through it, and Runt summed it up for me at the end.

Basically, what it is about is a psychiatrist who is called to a space station to check out the crew, who seems to be going a little fruit loops. I won't tell you what was going on, just in case someone out there is interested in watching. However, I will say that the premise is  a cool idea. I think it had a lot of potential but, the story got too bogged down in the main character's backstory, in my opinion.

Anyone else seen this one?

I watched the original Soviet era production (subtitled) about 15 years ago on video.  We did not watch the whole thing.  The stillness in the original was sort of purposeful, in that Solaris was the Soviet answer to 2001.  I guess they translated that over to the new film.

Heh, for that reason I avaided the Clooney version.

Not sure, but  I think the story is probably better explored in book form?

The original story is supposed to be this "great classic" of science fiction, seldom seen by English Speakers are there was only one limited translation.

I read an article (Wired I think) where the writer of the story was not kind to the American version or the fact that American audiences just don't get it.

Heh, well the Russian movie had me nodding off.  I know the book is a classic and considered literary SF.  The author, Stanislaw Lem is one of the greats of Russian SF.  I have to admit, I've always considered it a little too high-brow for my taste.  I always like some adventure, explosions, battles, and the like.   :p
