I rented Signs this weekend and gave it a whirl. Not a bad movie. The only real qualm I had with it concerned the acting. Everyone seemed like they were in a trance or on qualudes. There was very little emotion shown, even during the times when I would expect a normal person to be wetting himself in fear. Go Monotone Family!

Aside from that, though, I enjoyed the story itself which focused not so much on the aliens, but more on the idea of faith. Are you the sort of person who believes that there will always be someone to help or do you believe that we are all alone? Are there coincidences or miracles?

Oh, and I do have one other little problem with the story, but I won't bring it up since it would spoil the ending for those who haven't seen it. :)

Have not seen it.  I heard from some people they felt deceived by the commercials regarding the theme of the movie.

Yeah, I can see how a lot of people would feel deceived. You go into it expecting for there to be gaggles of aliens darting through cornfields, all hungry for tasty, human flesh. However, that's really only the sideline for the movie.

Yes, aliens are invading, but that's not the real focus of the movie at all. As I said, the focus is more on faith. The main character played by Mel Gibson is a reverand who left the church six months before the invasion occurs. He did this shortly after loosing his wife in an accident. Her last words to him as she lay dying were enough to shake him and make him question his faith. However, the alien invasion is enough to push him to question it all yet again, to re-evaluate his beliefs.

I think this would make a fabulous book. (I'm not sure, it may be. But, I'm thinking this is one of those where the book was written after the movie. I could be wrong, though.) There is so much potential for a lot of deep, involved character development there. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the movie fell short this department because of lackluster acting. The characters showed little to no emotion, making it very hard for you to sympathize with them.

the mrs. wanted to see this and i rented it last week. I didn't think it was underacted. They were a repressed and unexcitable type of family because they had suffered a major loss in a sort of hopeless situation. through the movie i was conveying the lack of spirit in the family with the outline on Graham's bedroom wall where his cross used to be.

for the payoff in the matter of faith i really liked the movie and the set-up. and i did get a little scare when the first alien was sited. as a Independance Day invasion movie it was not close.

the movie was written and directed by Night not-going-to-try-and-spell-his-last-name who did Sixth Sense and Unbreakable

I definitely see what you are saying about the repression, din, and it is completely understandable for a family to be withdrawn after such a loss. But, it wasn't just the family. Even the other townsfolk were....blah.

You know, I loved Sixth Sense but never saw Unbreakable. The hubby hated Unbreakable....said it bored him to tears.

Has anyone else seen that one?

yeah everybody was a little down, even in town, i think it was just the tone of the movie . it might have been the town seen through their eyes ... in some of the special features of the dvd they had an interview type thing which the director said his original concept was not to leave the farm, or even the house, that it would be just this family's reactions to what was going on, knowing they had a sign and growing to learn it would target them.

i've seen unbreakable, it was .. slow but i didn't feel bored with it; at least not too much. for the subject matter it was a unique aproach. i felt it missed the emotional payoff at the end somehow.
