SF/RPG Christmas Shopping Resource Guide 2002 - by Brad on 18:06 18 Nov 2002
Without posting affiliate links, let's make some SFFH gift recommendations for online shopping.  I know several authors have books that would make wonderful gifts.  There have to be some neat new computer games and pen and paper RPG's out there. Plus new DVD's - any little known films?  I know I am always looking for neat gift ideas, so this is the thread to make suggestions.

While we normally avoid promotion I think it appropriate to lend a hand to forums regulars, and also the small online SF merchants, craftsmen and webmasters.  This is part of what belonging to a community is all about.

I'll start.  :)

Just in case he is too shy to do it himself, the first thing I'll recommend is a book by one of our community members: Kainja aka Charles Gramlich - his novel "Cold in the Light"  available from Amazon, BN.com and other online booksellers of your choice. (Looks real good.)

I'll turn it over to you guys for now and pipe in later with more neat stuff as I find it.

You can thank Haru for this idea. I wouldn't have ever thought of it if he hadn't had pictures made for the threads. :)

If you've got a hardcore gamer in your family, you could always find a way to weasel a character description from him/her and have a portrait made by Mr. Reidy. Trust me, being a gamer myself, I love character portraits and you'll probably have no problems getting a description from your loved one. We gamers tend to be quite proud of our characters and will brag about them given an opportunity. :)

Original artwork is a good idea, IMO.

BTW we can post URL's -- there are going to be some things that just have to have a URL.  Just no affiliate links please.   :)

The LotR DVD would be a sweet gift. The problem would be deciding between the gazillion different versions they have out.

Kainja has a book out? I didn't realize that! Congratulations! I'll certainly check it out.

Dice are always a holiday favorite for gamers, as are miniatures. I've also given subscriptions to gaming magazines before.

Another favorite of gamers, scifi fans, and basically everyone.... cookies. You can't go wrong with cookies.

Haru, you obviously have this down to a science.   :D    And the cookies is a real good idea.

Any magazines you would recommend?

Any RPG game titles you guys would recommend?

Here is something that was added to the directory that caught my eye:
Location Earth Dog Tags in case you get abducted by space aliens these dog tags will tell them where to return you.   :p

I think I will be giving several people the Lord of the Rings movie on video or DVD this year.

Any other films that are good to give?

Also any CRPG's that are must have?

Great CRPGs:

Any of the Baldur's Gate series
Dungeon Siege
Icewind Dale

Not really RPGs, but worth mentioning:

Dungeon Keeper
Any of the Myst series
Zork: Grand Inquisitor

it is not personal, and gets out of the spirit of things, but i prefer cash money :)

Another good CRPG is Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magica Obscura. Excellent replayability on this one. A lot of the side quests you get depend on the race/gender you play.

An excellent movie to pick up would be Spirited Away, for any of the anime fans out there.

Here's another last minute addition to the list. Take a look at what the fine folks at Ogre Cave suggest for RPG stocking stuffers.
