On a game forum someone asked how people would "re-imagine"' the Star Trek universe the way they have re-imagined the Battlestar Galactica Universe. That sound like fun. What would you do?

And I guess i will go first

I would probably go back to a period akin to pre STOS.

I like technology that is not smoothly perfect. Like the first season of Enterprise, some of the cool tech is klunky and does not work all the time. The flawless technology they have for so many things made it seem odd when it broke down for the sake of the story (Transporter syndrome).

I like the human characters in STOS, not the biologic human, but the flawed and trying harder characters. STNG character were just too darn perfect. DS9 characters were better.. they have conflict/ motivations... you could write a character driven story from day one... unlike STNG where we have to get seriously into character development before you could try it.

I like the friend foe relationship between the various peoples. it allowed for dramatic conflict without destructive conflict in the crew. (I really wish the guy who hated Romulans and Vulcans stayed around more.... but he was just a red shirt).

I like the borrowed from the headlines that the original ST used. Cold war, race issues, etc. It grants more versimilitude and resonence to the stories.  Just call it Law and Order syndrome.  (DS 9 did a good job at this, exploring the arab israili conflict with super powers looming... pity nobody liked it).

Loose bumpy headed aliens... Farscape aliens, muppets and makeup. Also make a better explanation for the number of human-esk races.

While I don't mind plastic physics, at least keep your psuedo physics somewhat consistant. Doesn't anyone read the series bible?

Other thoughts?

I like the idea of going back to pre-STOS.  There probably is room for one or two series in there between ENT and STOS.

I would make early warcships more Das Boot like.  And yes things would not work.  While I like good sets, I also like the feel that just traveling at warp speed is an adventure.

Frankly I don't care to much about makeup or special effects, it's how good the acting and the script are.

I like the feeling that the captain is in command and must make his decisions mostly without being able to consult a higher authority.  I want a heroic crew - they can be flawed but still worthy of admiration.

I would jetison the techno-babble.  You will always have a certain amount but it got way out of hand on both TNG and Voyager.  The is a big difference between "Captain the wave phase transdusers are about to overheat  the klepto-bargshlepers!" and "Captain, the engines can't take this much longer!"

if i were to re-imagine Star trek i would agree to have the characters be flawed some what like Battlestar galatica and Babylon 5 (thats how i think you spell that word) any way the ships can not be high tech something to the affect that the ship breaks down and that as u guys said about the friend-foe relationship it should be between the captian and his greatest foe.the characters as you guys said should be flawed with attitudes like Jack O'neil from Sg-1 and starbuck from the new battlestar galatica.another thing that is that there should not be the (do good) federation they should act a little evil or nuetral in the galaxy.

It is interesting you mention Stargate SG-1, I have finally gotten a chance to watch more episodes (older reruns), it seems to me that SG-1 has captured more of the original Star Trek dynamic than the more recent Star Trek series have.  Anderson is believable as a leader for one thing.

I have not watched BG so I cannot compare.

I was thinking of the original Star trek series. I think SG-1 captures more of the essence of the original series.
