Radar Men from the Moon - by Brad on 06:11 21 Jan 2004
I'm getting back into watching old scifi shows on DVD once a week. I thought I would try something different so I'm watching a 12 part "Radar Men from the Moon" (1953) starring George Wallace as "Commando Cody". It's straight out of the pulps and the first episode was pretty good.
Somebody is using a nuclear raygun to destroy key defense installations. This coinciding with increased nuclear activity on the moon. Commando Cody and his valiant crew use the rocket ship Cody has just built to fly to the Moon and investigate.
What is fun is Clayton Moore (Lone Ranger) plays a badguy in this.

I've never even heard of this series, but it sounds like fun. I love those old SF titles, like Radar Men from the Moon, though more such titles come to me from reading than from movies or serials. Just the names are evocative:
When Worlds Collide
Maza of the Moon
Thief of Llarn
Swordsmen of Lost Terra
Warlord of Mars
and on and on

Yeah I love those titles. I watched the second episode and it was pretty good. I thouhgt the special effects were decent for the early 50's. The Moon men's costumes look like those you might be familier with from old Flash Gordon serials. Lots of fist fights and they look pretty realistic compared to some films I've seen.

Dont you find that you cant take Leslie Nielson seriously in Forbidden Planet because of police Squad and Nake Gun? He just keeps looking like Leslie Nielson...not his fault...but there it is. Not that it can be taken totally seriously anyway.

Yeah, I do. But Leslie's not the only such actor. I've never seen Leonard Nimoy in anything besides Star Trek without saying, "Hey, there's Spock," or William Shatner in anything without thinking, "Kirk." I know the actors hate it when people typecast them but I think it's just because they sometimes fit the role so perfectly that we come to see the charactes as actual people.
