A lot of gamers used to use these in D and D. I'm not sure even what questions to ask but I bet a whole category of a FAQ could be devoted to RPG minitures.

Miniatures, imo, make the game move much easier and give a definitive model during combat. With move increments, spell area of effects, and a host of other rules that can be used with minis, they seem to really help.
I've been playing with miniatures since 2e, and have always liked them.
As far as painting... well, there are several different techniques. None of which, again imo, that are really "better" than another. Each person has their own style of painting. I always remove any "flash" or excess material, from a miniature. I also only use a white primer.
Primer will help paint stick to the miniature, and will help to relieve the look of the paint being brushed on, as it levels out fine lines and wrinkles.
I only use a white primer because, to me, it gives the paint a much brighter vibe. However, in some ways, it is also less forgiving than say, a black primer.
Black primer provides instant shading in small areas, such as chainmail and creases in clothing. But it also mutes colors. Colors painted over black primer end up several shades darker than they look in the bottle, whereas a white primer keeps the paint looking much the same.
You should always clear-coat your minis when you are done. This will give further assurance against chipping and wear, especially if you use your minis to play with. Some folks like a matte finish clear-coat, I happen to prefer a gloss. It makes the mini look more vibrant and really makes small color differences stand out.
If I had a digital camera I'd take some pics of minis I have done.
If anyone has any more questions, then I will try my best to answer them.

Hey Haru,
This is some interesting stuff here.
Do you mind if I translate this into some Q and A's for the FAQ? I think other people will find this interesting too.

Thanks Haru!
Oh I'm, going to come back and pick your brains some more. I'm sure I'll have more questions.
*pick. pick. pick*

I just wish I could find a miniature for a Wemic.
I used to have some mini's, but am terrible at painting them. Clear-coated the earlier one's more for the fact they were made from lead.
Not sure what happened to them...so many moves...come to think of it, we still have some boxes that haven't been unpacked since Germany.
