Pirates of the Carribean - by Arislyn on 13:21 12 Jul 2003
Okay, I'll be upfront and tell you that I haven't seen Pirates of the Caribbean, yet. However, a good friend of mine went to see it earlier in the week and it received high praise, indeed, from him.
He said it was as good as Princess Bride....and Princess Bride is sacred in my little group.
So, I'm thinking that Runt and I may head out tonight to give it a look-see. If we do, I'll give you the scoop on whether or not it is any good.
If Keith has lied to me about PotC, then I'll just have to beat him next time I go to visit the in-laws.

If it is as good as Princess Bride they have a hit on their hands. I will be interested to hear what you think.

Well, Runt and I caught a showing of Pirates last night and, while we both do not agree with Keith in that it is not as good as Princess Bride.....it's still a fun, fun, FUN movie that is well worth the money to go see.
You've heard people use the term "rollicking good fun". Well, that is exactly what Pirates is. You have everything you could ever hope to get from a good pirate movie: a witty scoundrel of a captain, a good-hearted hero who breaks the law for the one he loves, a brave maiden who defies the wishes of her family and friends to follow her heart...and big, ol', whopper of a cursed treasure that comes with it's own "ghost ship".
You have adventure, love, betrayal, curses....everything you could ask for!
Johnny Depp as Capt'n Jack Sparrow is wonderful. I think he used Mick Jagger as the basis for his character. Now, I know that sounds awful, but...it works! Trust me. Jack Sparrow is great. And Orlando Bloom as Will Tanner does a great job of being the rash, young hero who risks it all for his love.
The movie has wonderful fight scenes and is rife with quotes that will stick with you well after you leave the theater. My personal favorite being:
Jack: So, how far are you willing to go for this girl?
Wil: I would die for her.
Jack: Right. Okay, then. No worries.
So, Pirates gets the Runt & Ari seal of approval. Go out and see it! You'll like it. You're guaranteed to walk out of the movie smiling and saying things like, "Arrrrgh!" and "Avast ye!" and wanting more pirate-y goodness.
By the way, I'm moving this thread to Fantasy. When I first posted this, I didn't know enough about the movie to know where it fit. But, it is definitely a fantasy film.
