I'm wondering if any of you young uns here have ever read the Perry Rhodan series, by K. H. Scheer and Walter Ernsting?  These are true space opera, in the tradition of the Lensman series, although I actually preferred Perry Rhodan to the Lensman books.  There are close to five hundred of the Rhodan books published, although I've only read a dozen or so, and I'm not sure they were all published in English.  (It was a German series.)  They can be good old fashioned fun, though, if you like your space opera without too much pretentiousness.

I'd never even heard of this guy before. I may have to see if I can find some of his work. I haven't read any good space opera in a long time.

I've heard both Perry Rhodan and the Lensman series mentioned but I have never read them.  I don't think I've ever seen them in print.

500 books in one series, my mind just boggles at that.

I see that it is available from Amazon.

Both the Lensman series, by E. E. Doc Smith, and the Perry Rhodan series are dated.  In the Perry Rhodan series they have a huge advanced starship from a futuristic race in which data is still printed out on key punched sheets of paper.  Yet, there is still some good fun to be had in them.  I tend to read one or two a year.

In Germany there was a Perry Rhodan magazine that was published monthly, I believe, or perhaps even more frequently.  The novels published in English came from that magazine.  I'm sure there were other writers besides the main two who contributed.

If you're interested, you should be able to find copies in the SF section of some of the used bookstores.

When did they start publishing this series? What year do you know?

The first Perry Rhodan book was published by Ace in 1969.  It was called #1 "Enterprise Stardust."  Perry Rhodan is an astronaut who lands on the moon and discovers some marooned aliens.  According to the blurb on this book, the first Perry Rhodan magazine was published 8 years earlier in Europe.  It also says the magazine was published once a WEEK.

There were three Perry Rhodan books published in the US in 1969, which also included #2, "The Radiant Dome," and #3 "Galactic Alarm."  I don't know how many total ones were published in the States.  The last one I have is #17, although I'm sure there were more.

The first Perry Rhodan I ever read was number #7, called "Fortress of the Six Moons," and this is still my favorite.  Chapter 1 is called "Someone always gets it on the dawn patrol," which I thought was a good hook.

The Lensman series began with "Triplanetary," which was published either in 1949 or 1950 by Pyramid Books.  "First Lensman," "Galactic Patrol," and "Gray Lensman" are the next three in that series.  The author, E. E. Smith, had a Ph.D., though I don't actually know what it was in.  The writing is not great but, again, these books can be fun space opera.

I went looking at Amazon: one of the customers said that there were 1800 Rhodan books published in Germany.  About 180 of those were published in America.  That is a lot of books.
