I finally broke down and bought a PS2 machine. Any recommendations for games for beginners like me?

<grins and claps hands together>
Where to begin? ...
If you like a good RPG, I highly recommend the Final Fantasy series. I'm still working on FFX, myself. They've got a great storyline, the graphics are wonderful and the controls are easy to learn. The battles tend to require more planning and thought, knowing your characters strengths and the enemy's weaknesses than anything else, since it is turn based. There's no twitch-fest here. Plus, the character advancement system is unique and fun, allowing you to customize the direction you want the characters to go and even overlap in skills, in case you need a backup healer/fighter/etc.
If you like a good RPG based hack n' slash, both Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath are good. They're very linear, much like Diablo but that doesn't mean that you can't have a ripping good time gathering loot and smashing through hordes of nasties. The best part of these games is the finding o' nifty loot that can be customized to better fit your needs. Heck, that's what I spend most of my time doing...comparing stats, trying to figure out where an upgraded Armor X will be better in the long run that slightly better Armor Y that I may need to replace soon....etc, etc.
I reviewed Forever Kingdom in this thread. It's a fun one!
And here is one for Sims for the PS2.
Let's see....another fun one that Runt and I have is Monopoly Party. It's just what it sounds like...Monopoly for the PS2. It's much faster than the board game and quite a bit of fun. You can have up to four players bidding, selling and buying away. However, if it's just you, then you can play against the computer...but it's more fun with actual humans. It doesn't take long to figure out how to beat the computer.
Heh! I'll post more later as I think of them.

Yeah I've heard about Baldur's gate. They say, at Amazon that the PS2 version does not have the dept that the PC version does but the hack'em up part works great. I'll probably end up getting that.
FF which one of the FF's do you recommend starting with there seems to be a lot of titles?

Yeah, the Baldur's Gate for PS2 is entirely hack n' slash. But, they have a lot of computerized boobies.
And, I've heard tell from my male friends that boobies, computerized or not, are good. Hehe! Runt and I laughed and laughed at the female dark elf in that series. I mean, here she was supposed to be going on about our imminent deaths and the way she gyrated and gestured, it looked like she was doing some sort of weird, Drowish pole dance.
Hmmm....as far as the FF series, the only one I can really recommend is FFX, since that's the only one I've played. However, most fans of the series say that you should start with FF7. Maybe someone else here can fill us in on the rest of the series..?

Well heck, if they would have told me there were boobies I would have bought a PS2 a lot sooner!
I just got a chance to play Medal of Honor: Frontline which is a shooter in Worldd War II. I'm learning what button does what on this controller thingy and that is my main objective right now. I have no idea how to actually win the game but it sure is exciting just the same. I think I died.
If you liked Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers you will like this game.
I also notice that PS2 is backward compatable with older Playstation games. They have some stuff like Space Invaders available for PS. That could be fun.
I can see that this is going to cost me money. Do you buy all your games new or do you try to buy used copies?

<laughs> Yeah, learning the controls for the first time is always a pain in the butt. That's why I can't play fighter games (Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, etc.) to save my life. I just end up frantically punching buttons and hoping that some sort of techno-miracle will occur and at least let me land one punch before I get my butt handed to me on a platter with a side of potatoes and some carrots.
We normally buy ours used. I have yet to buy a game that just flat didn't work. Now, I have had to occassionally put up with having no instructions for a game, which can be a real pain. If you go to gaming boards and ask, "How do I do this?" most people will jump all over you if the answer is in the manual, thinking you've pirated the game rather than bought a used copy. But, not having a manual is rare, too. I've only had it happen once or twice.
Plus, if you are willing to wait, a lot of titles will drop to $20 within a year. One of the hot titles that was out a year or two ago, Kingdom Hearts, you can now get for $15-20. It just means that you don't get the games when they are pipin', cyber-fresh, but...hey...I'm cheap. I buy all my games after they've gone on sale.

That is great news because it looks like I could save a heck of a lot of money buying used games. Yeah, the kid at the store said the price on new games starts dropping after about 6 months to a year. I don't need anything shiney and new.

Though I haven't tried ICO yet, I've heard some really great things about it. It's one of those games I keep meaning to pick up but I haven't gotten around to it.

I am finding a lot of good PS1 games to buy too. I've never played them so the will be like new to me: Myst, and the orginal Resident Evil.
Heck there is some very innovative stuff in the PS1 line. A lot of the PS2 games seem to be for young people or movie tie-ins somehow. I'm not complaining.

Oh, I had completely forgotten about Myst, even though I have the third installment, Exile for the PS2. Great, great game! I've always adored the immersive world and great puzzles of Myst. (The only thing I didn't like were the occasional puzzles that relied on sound. I'm completely tone deaf, so there was no way I could complete then. Runt ended up having to get me through those scenes.)
I also forgot about a fun racer/shooter we have, Starsky & Hutch. Yup. We have the PS2 game based on the old TV show. It's full of cartoony camp, with many 70's-tastic stills as they tell the story leading up to the newest chase. And, that is really what Starsky & Hutch is: a car chase game. If you are playing solo, you drive and shoot, with aiming being fairly automatic. If you are playing with two people, one drives the car while the other hangs out the window and shoots at the bad guys....which can be a heck of a lot of fun and darned hard to do. Aiming at a moving target while in a moving vehile that you aren't controlling is tough! However, as with most driving games, it gets to be a little boring after awhile and is best played in short bursts. At least for me, this isn't something that I can sit down and play for hours on end. But, for $15 or so, it's a fun diversion.

They have Riven too for PS1, I gather that was the sequel to Myst. I'm going to see if I like Myst before buying it.
I figure I better get the old stuff while it can still be bought at decent prices. On some of these old game if I come back a year from now the only copies available might be the $95 new in box ones or not available at all.
I remember when Myst came out for the PC, everyone was in awe of the game and that continued for a long time.

Yeah, Riven is the second installment and just as fun as the original.
Errr...okay. There's something weird about playing PS1 games on a PS2 and I don't remember what it is. It has something to do with the memory. I think you can play the PS1 games on the PS2 but to save those games you need...something. Gah! I don't remember. All I remember is hearing something about it from someone else...
Hehe! I know that is absolutely no help to you whatsoever. I'll do some more research on it and see what it may be that my little brain is trying to dredge up.

Oo! Oo! I know!
You need a PS1 memory card. You can't save a PS1 game on a memory PS2 card. Fortunately PS1 cards do fit in a PS2 machine.
Was that it?
I really like the fact that all those PS1 games will play on PS2 it ads a lot of depth and some can be bought very cheaply.

Hehehe! That was exactly what I was trying to remember, Brad. I knew it had something to do with the memory but I wasn't positive what.
