Whats your favorite mythology movie?

Mine has to be anything dealing with King Auther expecially The Myst of Avalon.... ummm.... All those old mythology ones w/ zeus and Hera and Athena.... Allot of the disney classics like Hercules....

Oh yeah don't forget the tv shows like Hercules and Xena. I use to watch Young Hercules but it was cancelled.  :(

My favorite Mythological movie is also King Arthur related.  That is Excalibur, which I thought was truly excellent.  As far as just great fun goes, though, I don't think you can beat the Ray Harryhausen Sinbad movies.  Loved those.
Mythology - by Arislyn on 23:14 19 Feb 2003
Clash of the Titans. Oh, yeah.....bring on the Kraken goodness!
Mythology - by Brad on 07:12 20 Feb 2003
I liked Excalibur.  And I liked all those stop motion movies from the 60's like Voyage of Sinbad stuff.
Mythology - by VampirePrincess on 19:57 20 Feb 2003
I have most of them at home. I remember in Elemantary school they would ask us to bring in movies... I will always bring in Jack the Giant Killer or the Sinbad films. Of course they will never choice them but thats ok I always still brought them in.  :D

All those stop motion annimation films are cool, the skeleton fight scene (Jason and the Argonauts ??)is still excellent even compared to todays special effects.  But as far as TV progs go there was an excellent Robin hood series about 10 years ago.  It had a really spooky mystic feel, and a haunting theme tune "Robin...the hooded man...".
Mythology - by Brad on 09:26 05 Mar 2003
Yeah that skeleton fight was good.  They kinda used the lack of fluid motion in the stop-motion effects to make the skeletons even creepier in their movements.  I thoght that was good.

Robin Hood: wow I don't remember that one.  Was that UK only?
Mythology - by NoonChild on 09:41 05 Mar 2003
Yeah it could have been Uk only, it is based over here after all, and I think the actors sounded like brits.  It had a memorable "Spirit of the forest" character who was like a man but with a stags head and towering antlers.  He used to appear in the forest at night among mist etc silhoetted against the sky, then after giving Robin cryptic messages he would disappear.  It was a while ago though, so if I saw it now I might not think it was so good. :)

Oh oh!  I remember that one.  *Something* The Hunter was the spirit character.  Robin was always talking with him in sort of visions.

It was dark.  I think it only lasted one season.  It wasn't bad but I don't remember much more.

Herne the Hunter

That's the fellow.  I used to have a little crush on the Robin character, before the actor got replaced later in the series'.

Sorry to kind of de-rail your conversation, but what did you guys think of the Hercules and Xena series over here?

When they first started I really liked them.... but as they went on they seemed to get more and more goofy. *sighs and shrugs* I don't know if they ever took them terribly seriously.

Then, there was a Conan series a few years back. It had Ralph... *tries to think of his name* You know, he played in "Gladiator" too. Anyways, it was actually decent at times, but I think it only lasted one season, maybe two. It was almost like a mini series though. They actually wrapped it up, and it didn't simply disappear like some other shows have.

On a side note, I'd love to see another Conan movie made. As long as it was done well.
Mythology - by Arislyn on 19:44 05 Mar 2003
Aw, now, see, that's what I loved about Xena and Hercules: the goofiness. I never felt like it was meant to be taken too terribly seriously, and so it didn't grate on my nerves the way some "wink-n'-nod" types of fantasy shows do. I always looked at those two shows as fantasy/comedy.

What I hate is when you have what is aiming to be a serious, epic fantasy and then smack in the middle of it, they do some sly, supposedly subtle wink to the audience. You know, you can have humor in a film without doing that. It's far classier to have well written, tongue-in-cheek humor than to "wink" at the audience.

What Ari said. :)

Hercules and Xena are the best series that came out in a long time but they are gone know. I use to watch them everytime they were on. Kevin Smith who played Ares died not to long ago. That was my favorite charictor besides Xena and Hercules.

Oh yea on WAM! They are showing Young Hercules. I enjoyed that too but they cancelled it but they are reshowing it.  :D
Mythology - by Haruchai on 22:37 06 Mar 2003
Oh, I absolutely loved both those series... when they first came out.

But, as I recall, and I may be wrong, the longer the series ran, the more outrageous and corny they got. I didn't like that particular aspect. I don't know if the writers were running out of material or what, but the series, especially Xena, just seemed to fall apart. Story-wise and adventure-wise.

Flog me if you wish, that's just how I remember it. *shrugs*
Mythology - by Arislyn on 11:53 07 Mar 2003
Okay, I have to admit that I didn't like it when they decided to do weird stories where the characters crossed over into today's modern world. I usually skipped those. But, overall, I enjoyed them.

What can I say? Eolus (sp?) was my hero. :)
Mythology - by VampirePrincess on 17:04 07 Mar 2003
Ahhh yes once Xena met Lucifer thats when I cringed at it. And the cross over to the modern world was fine with one or two eps but it got crazy.
Mythology - by Haruchai on 20:47 07 Mar 2003
*blushes* You wanna know my biggest reason for watching Xena?

The girl who played Gabriel.

D@mn! She was/is hot! I had a crush on her for the longest time.

And Alyson Hannigan from BtVS too....

.....*goes off in a corner and drools*.....
Mythology - by Kainja on 01:22 08 Mar 2003
I have to agree that Gabriella was quite the hott--- uhm I mean attractive young lady. As far as the Xena and Hercules shows went, I actually had quite a few problems with them.  I didn't mind a little mythology but in Xena they just way overdid it to my way of thinking, and they jumped around too much in history.  Some of the more serious episodes, like when Xena visits the land of the dead, were quite good though.  And I also liked the Callisto character.

I'll tell you when I stopped watching Xena, when they did the musical episode.  I just can't suspend my belief that far.
Mythology - by Brad on 10:39 08 Mar 2003
These were shows I watched off and on.  Sometimes their bluring of historical timelines irritated me, but neither they or I took them too seriously.

Gabriel was - er, attractive.  So was the gal that played Aphrodite (or were they calling her by her Roman name, Venus? I forget.)
Mythology - by Haruchai on 20:57 08 Mar 2003
Mmmmm.... Aphrodite.

Yeah, she had huge tracts of land. :p (I know some of the forum females are gonna kill me now).

The girl who played Callisto did do a good job. I liked the battles between her and Xena.

Uhm... er... *blush* Maybe I've said too much. *chuckles*

Eolas kicked ass too. He was funny. Pulled off the role very well. As did the guy who played Ares. *nod-nod*
Mythology - by NoonChild on 18:52 09 Mar 2003
As far as I remember from studying the Aeneid in Classics the name is spelt Aeolus, but he's a wind God and as I didn't watch all that much Xena I dont know if itws the same character.  Studying mythology really makes you anal when TV progs are inaccurate - like why are none of the Amazons ever one breasted as they are supposed to be (they cut them off to make archery easier!) Nice!!
Mythology - by Arislyn on 11:21 14 Mar 2003
Hmmmm...well, that's definitely not the same character. :) In the show, Aeolus was supposed to be Hercules...cousin, I think? But he was definitely mortal.

*laughs* Yeah, I know what you mean about the inaccuracies. To be completely honest, I'm the same way about medieval, historical films. My friends get outdone with me because I'll sit there and pick apart a film, "But....but....those are Japanese longbows! Since when do the French peasantry use Japanese longbows?" At which point my friends pelt me with popcorn and Goobers until I shut up.   :p

Me too, I hate gross inaccuracies like that.
