Last week, I got a chance to watch a wonderful anime film called Memories. It is a feature length DVD containing three, short films.
The first film, Magnetic Rose, was probably the best out of the three. It tells the story of a space salavage ship which answers a mysterious SOS...a call for help that leads them straight into the center of a graveyard filled with tons of derelict ships. At the center of this graveyard is a long forgotten home, the sanctuary of a fallen opera singer, a woman who could not live with the present....
The second film, Stink Bomb, is the story of a sickly research technician who decides to try one of the company's new, experimental cold medicines. The problem is, the company hasn't been telling the entire truth about what they are doing and the hapless young man becomes their guinea pig.
The third film, Cannon Fodder, is the tale of a bleak and highly industrialized world where an entire city and all of its denizens live for a single purpose: to fire gigantic cannons at an unseen foe.
The first two films are great! They are both well drawn and have good, solid stories. Magnetic Rose is serious and mysterious while Stink Bomb balances between being serious and funny. Cannon Fodder, however, was entirely an "art flick". There was no plot or story to it. All it did was follow the day of a single family as they went about their daily chores and jobs. I know it was supposed to be a commentary on war and how one can fight for something mindlessly, without ever really knowing about one's enemy or why you do what you do....but that doesn't make this film any less boring.
So, if you get a chance to rent it, definitely watch the first two films, but skip the last one.

Errrr...I honestly don't remember how long each short was. I'm pretty sure they were at the very least 1/2 hour long. Unfortunately, we've already returned the DVD to the video store and, when I checked amazon to see if they had anymore details like that, they didn't.
