Now that the movie itself has been weighed in on over in the sci-fi section, let's continue onto the soundtrack... for many may be tempted to at least pick up the CD for the cool techno goth tunes.

Well... they are there... but if that is all you are looking for, you will end up skipping quite a few tracks. Juno Reactor combines with orchestrated scores in some of the tracks to create a hybrid sound that ends up sounding in a lot of places like someone's techno classical remix. These tracks are definitely high energy, combining bass lines and some really good, hard drum work. Tracks like Navras, which I believe played during the end credits, combine the orchestra strings and horns with vocals chanting (in this one, almost operatic in nature) and a very jungle techno electronic stream. Think of something like a faster techno remix of a track by Deep Forest. Another good example of this is Tetsujin... again the techno influence Juno Reactor brings can definitely be heard.

But remixes of Rob Zombie songs they are not.

Don't get me wrong... the dark goth mood that pervades all the Matrix movies does have some representation here, especially "In my head" by Pale 3... a typical heavy bass with a strong male lead vocalist belting out a very goth club sound.

But this is the actual movie soundtrack when you boil it down. This IS the mood music that blends into the background, stretching from scene to scene without really being noticed.

Those that like the typical movie score soundtrack (LOTR soundtrack jumps to mind) will probably be pleased with the purchase, as there are many more tracks that feature almost entirely the orchestra than ones that are hybrid or pure electronic. Not quite as cool as, say, the Batman score by Danny Elfman... but great mood music.

The two styles used in this CD are definitely different enough that those that like a beat to their music may want to slip over to Barnes and Noble and skim through to see if there is enough for their taste. What is there is good, just no where near the quantities you got in the other Matrix soundtracks.

Otherwise, it may be time to try out the new music services and see if you can purchase the Juno Reactor songs on a track by track basis.
