Sisters of Mercy: Cry Little Sister
The last fire will rise
Behind those eyes
Black house will rock
Blind boys dont lie
Immortal fear
That voice so clear
Through broken walls
That scream I hear
Cry little sister (thou shall not fall)
Come come to your brother (thou shall not die)
Unchain me sister (thou shall not fear)
Love is with your brother (thou shall not kill)
Blue mascarade
Strangers look up
When will they learn this lonliness?
Temptation heat
Beats like a drum
Deep in your veins
I will not lie little sister (thou shall not fall)
Come come to your brother (thou shall not die)
Unchain me sister (thou shall not fear)
Love is with your brother (thou shall not kill)
My shangrila
I cant forget
Why you were mine
I need you now
Cry little sister (thou shall not fall)
Come come to your brother (thou shall not die)
Unchain me sister (thou shall not fear)
Love is with your brother (thou shall not kill)
Cryyyyy little sister (thou shall not fall)
Come come to your brother (thou shall not die)
Unchain me sister (thou shall not fear)

Cryyyyyyy little sister (thou shall not kill)

Rush . grace under pressure .. The Enemy Within
I only have the one stanza, but i think it is the important one.
To you -- is it movement or is it action ?
Is it contact or just reaction ?
And you -- revolution or just resistance ?
Is it living or just existance ?
Yeah, you -- it takes a little more persistance
to get up and go the distance.
I think through all the music i like and liked the lyrics of Pert from rush stuck with me in of themselves the most . songs like 'trees', 'closer to the heart,' 'natural science,' 'xanadu'
there was a comedian .. maybe Steve Allen sp? .. who read song lyrics as poetry for a laugh . without the music and the atmosphere most music lyrics fall apart.
another is 'All Apologies' which i never really paid too much attention to until Sinead o'Conner covered the song on "Universal Mother" as a acoustic piece .. and it was devastating to hear it .. and understand the words.

I'd have to say right up front that I agree that most song lyrics fall apart as poetry when removed from the music. That happens, for me, to most of what Jim Morrison wrote, which is why I don't consider him a great, or actually even a minor poet. My favorite lyrics, currently, are the words to U2's "Bullet the Blue sky."
"See the faces of fear, running scared through the valley below."
Those lyrics actually have inspired my own poetry. But the all time best song lyrics, to me, are from "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zepplin.
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our souls
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

I have a song for this .. i just downloaded a mp3 of a Blue Oyster Cult song. This song has a interesting pedigree. it is a reprise of a song from an earlier album Secret Treaties. The song this one is based on is called Subhuman.
What happened is that in the late80s, the exact time eludes me, one of the members of BOC decided to do a strange compilation album . taking various songs from various preceeding albums and weaving them into a new concept album with some new matierial. What affect this had for me was it turned the whole lot of albums, new and old, into a strange meta-concept where the songs from the earilier albums are seen in a new light in relation to how they were redone in the new album. This made the old albums, many of which were themed albums themselves, involved in the big new concept.
anyway .. here is 'Blue Oyster Cult' from Imaginos by Blue Oyster Cult.
I am becalmed by virtue
lost to nothing on a bay of dreams
Warm weather and a holocaust
The tears of god flow as I bleed
Left to die by two good friends
Abandonned me and put to sleep
on a shore where oyster beds seemed plush as down
and ripe enough for the Luxor dream
Recall the dream of Luxor
how fluids will arive,
as if by call or schedule,
resume through the morning tide
where entry is by seaweed gate
I plan the plan of dreams
to loose oneself in rebirth
and all that is and all that seems
So, ladies, fish, and gentlemen
here's my angled dream
See me in the blue sky bag
and meet me by the sea
The oyster boys are swimming now
to claim me back from the dead
The creatures back from vertigo,
they fear to fall but haven't fell,
will reclaim tries and try again
The oysters boys are swimming now
Hear them chatter on the tide
of the lost and langauge lost
Hear them chatter on the tide,
'we understand '
and so do I
but fright is real and so am I
So, ladies, fish, and gentlemen
heres my angled dream
See me in the blue sky bag
and meet me by the sea
The entrance to the lost vestibul opens on the bay
an instant shape of mercury lost and then retained
as instant as an eyelash caught on the tide
Imaginos, below this bay and then beside
The oysters boys are swimming now
one deal is what we made
forest keys and whirlwind cold
green keys too and keys of gold
and even locks that won't explode
when the sky's become a scroll,
having lost it's interest,
see that's the deal we made
just to join the Oyster Cult
the Blue Oyster Cult

Lonely
by Human Drama
ashes fall from the cigarette of the man who can't forget
who learns more from a single second of silence
than from any word ever spoken to him
any poem misunderstood
or from every second of his past that haunts him
could i be more lonely
could i be more lonely
could i be more lonely
i don't know if i could
put in front of the mirror
why he can't recall
as he stares into the scars he cannot cover
but to all hands laid upon him
and all the hands that try to hold him
the pain still hides beneath the surface
could i be more lonely.....
night passes behind him but he doesn't turn to look
the shackles and the gag will not allow it
so far am i from caring, he says
or do i care too much?
for the more i give the more i must be given
could i be more lonely
i don't know if i could

I've been listening to this a lot lately . a live version from 2000. which gives it a lot more power when the audience is singing along . from Born to Run 1975
THUNDER ROAD
The screen door slams
Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside
darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me
You can hide `neath your covers
And study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now I'm no hero
That's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow back your hair
Well the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back
Heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh come take my hand
Riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road
oh Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run
Oh Thunder Road, sit tight take hold
Thunder Road
Well I got this guitar
And I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back
If you're ready to take that long walk
>From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride it ain't free
And I know you're lonely
For words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free
All the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone
On the wind, so Mary climb in
It's a town full of losers
And I'm pulling out of here to win.

Fogelberg -- the music didn't quite fit.
*There's a ring around the moon tonight
And a chill in the air
And a fire in the stars that hang - so near
so near
There's a sound in the wind that blows
Through the wild mountain holds
Like the sighs of a thousand crying souls
Crying souls --
There's a time when the traveller is fated to find
That insight has turned his gaze behind -- behind
And the steps taken yesterday
Will beckon again
And lead to his weary journey's end -- journey's end.
**And in the passage
From the cradle to the grave
We are born, madly dancing
rushing headlong through the crashing of the days
We run on and on
Without a backward glance
We run on and on
Without a backward glance.
But I cast my fate with the wife of Lot
I turned my gaze around
Knowing neither what I sought nor what was to be found
Heeding weakness, feeding strength
Life at length is frail
I seek again the river's source through time's dark shadowed veil
In the fast fading century
As we spin through the years
I pray that our failing vision clears -- our vision clears
**
The places dash and the faces dart
Like fishes in a dream
Hiding 'neath the murky banks of long-forgotten streams
The lines of life are never long when seen from end to end
The future's never coming, and the past has never been
*

Since we're talking about this song in the Radiohead thread, I figured I would post the lyrics here.
Radiohead: "Creep"
When you were here before
Couldn't look you in the eye
You're just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry
You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
And I wish I was special
You're so fuckin' special
But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo.
What the #### am I doing here?
I don't belong here.
I don't care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice
When I'm not around
You're so fuckin' special
I wish I was special
But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo.
What the #### am I doing here?
I don't belong here.
She's running out again,
She's running out
She's run run run running out...
Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You're so fuckin' special
I wish I was special...
But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo,
What the #### am I doing here?
I don't belong here.

k this song is interesting to me cause i've been there metaphorically and in a real way
When I Fall - Barenaked Ladies
Stare straight in the window
Try not to look below
Pretend I'm not up here
I try counting sheep
The sheep seem to shower
from this office tower
It's 9.8 straight down. I can't stop my knees
I wish I could fly from this window
from this wall
And if I try, would you catch me if I fall?
My hands clench the squeegee
My secular rosary
Hang on to your wallet
Hang onto your rings
Can't look below me
Something will throw me
I curse at the windstorms that October brings.
I look straight in the boardroom,
a modern pharoh's tomb
I'd gladly swap places,
if they'd care to dive
They're lined up at the window,
peer down into Limbo,
frightened of jumping in case they survive.
I wish I could fly from this window
into soft green pastures, shopping malls
or bed with my family
and my pastor
and my grandfather who's dead
I look straight int he mirror,
watch it come clearer
I look like a painter
behind all the grease,
but painting's creating
and I'm just erasing
A crystal clear canvas is my masterpiece
I wish I could fly from this window
from this wall
and if I try
would you catch me if I fall?

Hey you, see me, pictures crazy,
All the world I've seen before me passing by,
I've got, nothing, to gain, to lose,
All the world I've seen before me passing by,
You don't care about how I feel,
I don't feel it anymore,
You don't care about how I feel,
I don't feel it anymore
You don't care about how I feel,
I don't feel it anymore,
You don't care about how I feel,
I don't feel it anymore.
Hey you, are me, not so pretty,
All the world I've seen before me passing by,
Silent my voice, I've got no choice
All the world I've seen before me passing by,
You don't care about how I feel,
I don't feel it anymore,
You don't care about how I feel,
I don't feel it anymore
You don't care about how I feel,
I don't feel it anymore,
You don't care about how I feel,

"Low Man's Lyric"
Metallica
My eyes seek reality
My fingers seek my veins
Theres a dog at your back step
He must come in from the rain
I fall cause I let go
The net below has rot away
So my eyes seek reality
And my fingers seek my veins
The trash fire is warm
But nowhere safe from the storm
And I can't bare to see
What I've let me be
So wicked and worn
So as I write to you
Of what is done and to do
Maybe you'll understand
And won't cry for this man
'Cause low man is due
Please forgive me
My eyes seek reality
My fingers feel for faith
Touch clean with a dirty hand
I touched the clean to the waste
The trash fire is warm
But nowhere safe from the storm
And I can't bare to see
What I've let me be
So wicked and worn
So as I write to you
Of what is done and to do
Maybe you'll understand
And won't cry for this man
'Cause low man is due
Please forgive me
Please forgive me
Please forgive me
So low the sky is all I see
All I want from you is forgive me
So you bring this poor dog in from the rain
Though he just wants right back out again
And I cry, to the alley way
Confess all to the rain
But I lie, lie straight to the mirror
The one I've broken, to match my face
The trash fire is warm
But nowhere safe from the storm
And I can't bare to see
What I've let me be
So wicked and worn
So as I write to you (yeah)
Of what is done and to do (yeah)
Maybe you'll understand
And won't cry for this man
'Cause low man is due
Please forgive me
Please forgive me
So low the sky is all I see
All I want from you is forgive me
So you bring this poor dog in from the rain
Though he just wants right back out again
My eyes seek reality
My fingers seek my veins
"Low Man's Lyric"
Metallica
My eyes seek reality
My fingers seek my veins
Theres a dog at your back step
He must come in from the rain
I fall cause I let go
The net below has rot away
So my eyes seek reality
And my fingers seek my veins
The trash fire is warm
But nowhere safe from the storm
And I can't bare to see
What I've let me be
So wicked and worn
So as I write to you

Rush
Double Agent
Where would you rather be?
Anywhere but here
When will the time be right?
Anytime but now
"On the edge of sleep, I was driting for half the night
Anxious and restless, pressed down by the darkness
Bound up and wound up so tight."
So tight...
"So many decisions, a million revisions
Caught between darkness and light..."
Wilderness of mirrors
World of polished steel
Gears and iron chains
Turn the grinding wheel
I run between the shadows
Some are phantoms, some are real
Where would you rather be?
Anywhere but here
When will the time be right?
Anytime but now
Where would you rather be?
The doubt and the fear
I know would all disappear
Anywhere but here
Anywhere but here...
"On the edge of sleep, I heard voices behind the door
The known and the nameless, familiar and faceless
My angels and my demons at war"
At war...
"Which one will lose depends on what I choose
Or maybe which voice I ignore..."
Wilderness of mirrors
Streets of cold desire
My precious sense of honour
Just a shield of rusty wire
I hold against the chaos
And the cross of holy fire
Wilderness of mirrors
So easy to deceive
My precious sense of rightness
Is sometimes so naive
So that which I imagine
Is that which I believe
"On the edge of sleep, I awoke to a sun so bright
Rested and fearless, cheered by "your nearness
I knew which direction was right
Was right...
"The case had been tried by the jury inside
The choice between darkness and light...
The choice between darkness and light."

ok i was thinking that I haven't heard many songs recently, or not recently, that were narative in nature. since this is the core of many cultures music, story telling, i think that is interesting. So racking my brain in an offhand way I made a very short list of narative songs, where there is a story told from beginning to end.
Rush - Red Brachetta
Rush - 2112
Family Snapshot - Peter Gabriel
and for the on topic part of the post
Cammander Codie and his Lost Airmen
'Hot Rod Lincon'
My pappy said, "Son, you're gonna' drive me to drinkin'
If you don't stop drivin' that Hot Rod Lincoln"
Have you heard the story of the Hot Rod Race
When Fords and Lincolns was settin' the pace?
That story is true, I'm here to say
I was drivin' that Model A
It's got a Lincoln motor and it's really souped up
That Model A body makes it look like a pup
It's got eight cylinders and uses them all
It's got overdrive, just won't stall
With a four-barrel carb and a dual exhaust
With four-eleven gears you can really get lost
It's got safety tubes, but I ain't scared
The brakes are good, tires fair
Pulled out of San Pedro late one night
The moon and the stars was shinin' bright
We was drivin' up Grapevine Hill
Passing cars like they was standing still
All of a sudden in a wink of an eye
A Cadillac sedan passed us by
I said, "Boys, that's a mar for me!"
By then the tail light was all you could see
Now the fellas ribbed me for bein' behind
So I thought I'd make the Lincoln unwind
Took my foot off the gas and, man alive
I shoved it on down into overdrive
Wound it up to a hundred and ten
My speedometer said that I hit top end
My foot was glued like lead to the floor
That's all there is and there ain't no more
Now, the boys all thought I'd lost my sense
And telephone poles looked like a picket fence
They said, "Slow down! I see spots!"
The lines on the road just look like dots
Took a corner; sideswiped a truck
Crossed my fingers just for luck
My fenders was clickin' the guardrail posts
The guy beside me was white as a ghost
Smoke was comin' from out of the back
When I started to gain on that Cadillac.
Knew I could catch him, I thought I could pass
Don't you know by then we'd be low on gas?
We had flames comin' from out of the side
Feel the tension, Man! What a ride!
I said, "Look out, boys, I've got a license to fly!"
And that Caddy pulled over and let us by
Now all of a sudden she started to knockin'
And down in the dips she started to rockin'
I looked in my mirror; a red light was blinkin'
The cops was after my Hot Rod Lincoln!
They arrested me and they put me in jail
And called my pappy to throw my bail
And he said, "Son, you're gonna' drive me to drinkin'
If you don't stop drivin' that Hot ... Rod ... Lincoln!"

She's Leaving Home by the Beatles has to be the ultimate story/song....A girl living a suburban life runs away to have fun, but her parents cant understand....
"How couls she treat us so thoughtlessly,
How could she do this to me?"
(I don't have all the lyrics here now but I'll add them later)

"The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot comes to mind for me.
Heh! That's what I get for having hippy parents.

I do some Gordon Lightfoot songs. Don Quixote is excellent.
Dan Fogelberg is great with story/lyrics.

This one always makes me giggle....
Artist : Arrogant Worms
Song : The Last Saskatchewan Pirate
Oh, I used to be a farmer and I made a living fine,
I had a little stretch of land along the CP line
But time are hard and though I tried, the money wasn't there
And bankers came and took my land and told me fair is fair
I looked for every kind of job, the answer always "no"
Hire you now, they'd always laugh, we just let twenty go!
The government, they promised me a measly little sum
But I've got too much pride to end up just another bum.
Then I thought who gives a #### if all the jobs are gone
I'm gonna be a PIRATE! on the River Saskatchewan!
(ar.. ar.. ar..)
Chorus:
Cause it's a heave-ho! hi-ho!
Coming down the plains
Stealing wheat and barley and all the other grains
And it's a ho-hey! hi-hey!
Farmers bar your doors when you see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores.
Arr!
Well you think the locals farmers would know that I'm at large
But, just the other day I saw an unprotected barge
I snuck up right behind them and they were none the wiser,
I rammed their ship, and sank it, and I stole their fertilizer!
A bridge outside of Moose Jaw spans a mighty river
The farmers pass in so much fear, their stomachs are a-quiver
Because the know that TRACTOR JACK! is hiding in the bay,
I'll jump the bridge and knock them cold and sail off with their hay!
Chorus
Well Mountie Bob he chased me, he was always at my throat
He'd follow on the shoreline but he didn't own a boat
But cutbacks were a-coming and the Mountie lost his job
Now he's sailing with me and we call him Salty Bob.
A swingin' sword, and skull n' bones, and pleasant company
I never pay my income tax and screw the GST- SCREW IT!
Prince Albert down to Saskatoon, I'm the terror of the sea
If ya wanna reach the Co-op, boy, you gotta get by me!
Chorus
Well, pirate life's appealing, but you don't just find it here
I've heard that in Alberta, there's a band of bucaneers
They roam the Athabasca, from Smith to Fort McKay
And you're gonna lose your Stetson if you have to pass their way
Well winter is a-coming and a chill is in the breeze
Our pirate days are over once the river starts to freeze
I'll be back in springtime, but now I 've to go,
I hear there's lots of plundering down in New Mexico!
Chorus
Repeat Chorus

Sheryl Crow - We do what we can
Downatairs they're playing Kenton
The house set to swing
I lay in my bed and listen to everything
Leo's in rare form tonight
His trombone sings so sweet
And this is the room where they all come to meet
And he says
I do what I can
I live for the moment
Thats who I am
Thats who I am
And isn't it good
If we could freeze moments in time
We all would
I do what I can
Downstairs they're playing Kenton
The magnavox sighs
Oh how the music has changed
In all of our lives
He says nobody listens
To modern jazz
So I'll never have
What those guys had
And he says,
I do what I can
I work for a living
Cos thats who I am
Yeah, thats who I am
And it's good to be alive
But everythings different
Since Leo died
I do what I can
Is this the end of the modern world?
What could it mean,
For a young girl
Who sees the pain on his face
He does what he can
The procession on the TV screen
What could it
Possibly mean
For a man whos come this far
Just to turn around
Could there still be life in
Kentons swing?
With the Kennedy's gone and
Everything?
These sad rows of houses
With their optimistic colours
Democratic Grandparents, draught dodging brothers
Riots down the street, discontentd mothers
Does what he can....
Downstairs
Its quiet
Less alive somehow
And somehow, he was
Everything that I am now
And I do what I can
I live for the moment
That who I am
Oh, yeah, thats who I am
And its good to be alive
These are the choices
We made to survive
I do what I can

Now all through high school I was a big fan of The Clash and since followed Mick Jones career as / in Big Audio Dynomite .. anyways, recently i came across a clash double album i used to own that i've been unable to find again for a long time. Sandidista
in retrospect they were my first exposure to a jamaican music style ( much of the early punk was influenced by that music style the original 'heart of glass' by Blondie was a very reggae song. ) also i like music with a little bit of social awareness or thought and The Clash fit that bill. They just didn't protest societal trends .. they named names
and this is one of those
Washington Bullets
The Clash Sandidista 1980
Oh! Mama, Mama look there!
Your children are playing in that street again
Don't you know what happened down there?
A youth of fourteen got shot down there
The Kokane guns of Jamdown Town
The killing clowns, the blood money men
Are shooting those Washington bullets again
As every cell in Chile will tell
The cries of the tortured men
Remember Allende, and the days before
Before the army came
Please remember Victor Jara
In the Santiago Stadium
Es verdas - those Washington Bullets again
And in the Bay of Pigs in 1961
Havana fought the playboy in the Cuban sun
For Castro is a colour
Is a redder than red
Those Washington bullets want Castro dead
For Castro is the colour...
...That will earn you a spray of lead
For the very first time ever
When they had a revolution in Nicaragua
There was no interference from America
Human rights in America
Well the people fought the leader
And up he flew...
With no Washington bullets what else could he do?
'N' if you can find a Afghan rebel
That the Moscow bullets missed
Ask him what he thinks of voting Communist...
...Ask the Dalai Lama in the hills of Tibet
How many monks did the Chinese get?
In a war-torn swamp stop any mercenary
'N' check the British bullets in his armoury
Que?
Sandinista!
