Is this the right place to chat about books? I thought I'd introduce you all to my namesake, author Jeff Noon. I love his work, really modern in structure and style, sometimes disturbing, but always absorbing. He has set two novels now in the same ultra modern world where dogs and humans have bred to form dogpeople, the virtual world is sold like a drug and accessed through sucking feathers (pink ones for porn, blue for relaxation etc) taxi drivers are mentally linked to their cars and shadow cops can get inside your mind
. So if you are interested check out "Vurt" and "Pollen". "Automated Alice" is set somewhere diff but was still really popular here.

You picked the right board, NoonChild.
If you are talking about literature, just put your thread in the correct genre.
Hmmm...I hadn't heard of this gentleman before. Next time I make a foray out to B&N, I may have to look around and see if I can locate any of his books. Thanks for pointing him out!
I'm trying to think of anything that I've read that you may enjoy, but I tend to read more fantasy than anything else.

Noon is from Manchester UK so i dont know how easily you'll get hold of him.
But what with all this internet stuff you might have luck. I like fantasy too, but not too many big breasted warrior women on the covers please.

Big breasted warrior women!..... *drools*
Er, wait.... yeah, that's bad.
I tend to lean more towards the fantasy genre as well. Though I don't get a chance to read nearly as much as I'd like. Other aspects of life always seem to get in the way. *sigh*
Anyways, thanks for the recommendation!

I've not heard of Jeff Noon either, but his books sound rather interesting. A writer that I read who sounds like he does something a bit similar, in the sense of being sort of weird and slipstream, is Chuck Palahniuk. He's the guy who wrote the book Fight Club, which was later made into a movie with Brad Pitt and Edward Norton.
Anyway, welcome to the forums.

I'm not familier with Noon either but I see his books are available online. That is good, the internet make everything a bit less regional.
Verne, Asimov and Clarke were my original SF favorites although I also really enjoyed Burroughs John Carter of Mars books.

I thought I was "old school" with Asimov, Bradburry, Clarke, and Niven. (sorry no D author.) Geeze.

Well okay some more modern ones: Dan Simmons "Hyperion", Jerry Pournelle and his Falkenburg stories and Pournelle and Niven in Mote in God's Eye and the Legacy of Herot were good. Brin's Uplift War books were good too.
