LARP - by NoonChild on 05:57 20 Jan 2005
Im really into the idea of LARP (freeform rather than battle reconstruction) because it is basically like being back in the playground playing "Pretend". However Ive never found out about any going on because I have this sinking feeling that loads of time is spent milling around sorting out RL issues such as who is who and "ooops my costume has split has anyone got safety pins" etc. Whereas I want something where everything you say and do from almost moment of arrival is in the role. If your "clothes" split you should fix it in character, or at least get safety pins from someone in character. You can get to know the real people at the pub afterwards!
Anyone here go to any LARP events? Is it actually more fun making your costume and creating backstory than actually playing?

I played in a LARP a couple of times and just couldn't get into it. I think my problem, though, stemmed from the fact that I was LARPing with a group that had been playing together for a couple of years and it was a large group (held on one of the local college campuses here). So, everyone had already established their "cliques"...they had people they were used to interacting with and I found it hard to insert my character into anyone's plot.
I also ran into a lot of what you were talking about, with people being out of character a great deal of the time. Since most of the people were friends, they would mill around a chat about school or work rather than playing.
I was playing Vampire, so there really wasn't much in the way of costumes. It was a modern day setting, and my Gangrel pretty much dressed the way I do, anyway (comfort > appearance).
But, you know, every group is different. If I were you, I'd give it a try. Your experience could be completely different from mine. It can't hurt to give it a go!
