IRC and ME - by din on 18:50 29 Mar 2003
I used to have a weekly, sparsely populated chat through my history sites some time ago .. for reason too long to list the chat went away .. i've been thinking about replacing and expanding that chat using an outside IRC server .. I chose StarChat cause i'd run across it a great deal through rpg listings and general stuff ...
i've registered my nick and set up a channel so reaching the end of my knowledge .. I'm a learn as I go when it comes to online stuffs .. the channel will be for all my online work, extand and in progress. i was wondering if anybody had any advice, warnings, encouragements etc. about doing this . i'm in the process of reading tutorials and primers but would be interested in input before i started making links and such.
The channel is #grackelfish the server is irc://irc.StarChat.Net or irc.StarChat.Net. they have a nice javaclient where you just make you nick on the main page then the name of the channel on the subsequent page sans the "#"

I've been testing IRC with din. I can see why so many RPG's are on IRC Channels ("channels" are essentially chat rooms) the system is much more stable and solid than any chat room I have ever tried.
IRC channels require a chat client. A decent one comes free with Mozilla browser http://mozilla.org/ called Chatzilla
IRC is a bit more complicated to get started in than just a chat room which is why it is not real mainstream, but I'm amazed at how well it works once you know how to logon.
Has anyone had any experience with IRC?

what i have so far is a channel on starchat ..
/server irc.starchat.net
/join #grackelfish
The server can be reached through a variey of clients. Trillian and some of the other 'multi IM' clients work fairly well, i've been using trillian for the last couple days ... i found also think Chatzilla works well, and can be installed directly in mozilla and mozilla based browsers (ie Netscape) with chatzilla you can click an IRC protocal link like this irc://irc.starchat.net/grackelfish and be whisked away.
I don't have any real plans for it except to expand things a bit. The one room will handle chat topics from here, my internet directory at grackelfish.com and history topics from din-timelines.com. so it will be a fantasy-sci-fi, rpg, history, internet SEO, search engine sort of chat
