I read a couple of sci fi short stories many years ago. I'm sure I read them in a short story collection in the early eighties. I thought I still had the book on my bookshelf, but it's not there. The plot of one is about a girl who stows-away on a small transport taking medicine to a colony (her brother's on the colony). The pilot discovers her and has to eject her into space because she caused the transport to be overweight. Does anyone know who wrote this and when? The other story is about a transporter that takes people from, maybe, earth to the moon or mars in an instant, but you have to be sedated and unconscious to use it. A young boy decides to stay awake (faking taking the sedative) and ends up going thru the transport for an eternity, and comes out the other end gray haired and crazy. If anyone knows of these stories and who/when they were written, please let me know. I was telling my son about them and he's very interested in reading them (and he's never interested in reading!) so I really want to find them. Thanks! You can email me directly at cher4949@lycos.com if you know.

Hi, it so happens that I know of both stories and have the information you are seeking.
Story 1, about the girl who stows away on that transport, is called "The Cold Equations." It was written by Tom Godwin in 1954. I'm not sure where it first appeared but it is reprinted in the book called "The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume one," Edited by Robert Silverberg. This should be relatively easy to locate at a used book store.
Story 2, about they young boy staying awake when he should be sedated, is by Stephen King and is one of the best short stories he ever wrote, in my opinion. It's called: "The Jaunt" and it appeared in 1981 in the Twilight Zone magazine. It has also been reprinted in his "Skelton Crew" collection.
Hope this helps,
Best,
Charles Gramlich
