Hope and Glory - by Arislyn on 10:18 28 Feb 2005
Though she knows she should not be eavesdropping, Widget finds that she can’t help but listen intently, her curiosity overwhelming any sense of propriety. Despite the clank and clatter of wood and steel in motion, she finds that she can barely make out the words. As she listens in silence to Dimidus’ tale, she sighs inwardly. Such cruelty should never have to be suffered by anyone, much less a child…even less so at the hands of one’s own mother. However, a smile makes it way across her lips as the conversation continues, moving away from tales of hardship and into an offer of acceptance. She chuckles softly, the promiscuous elf’s kindness only strengthening her liking of him.

Interesting, though. We’re both orphans, she thinks. With a mental shrug, she files that away as a odd coincidence and turns her attention to their unconscious passengers, watching for any signs that they may be waking.

Odo feels the gaze of Widget on him as he regains his strength and his mobility. Feeling slightly playful, or is it just indulging in that last bit of orcish maliciousness he once knew, he opens his eyes wide before the woman, then says, "BOO!"

Hope and Glory - by Arislyn on 15:43 28 Feb 2005
Caught completely by surprise, Widget startles and pulls herself up onto the seat, pushing herself into a standing position...which isn't good. Even though she's not much over three feet tall, that's still tall enough to clonk her head on the carriage's roof.

"Ow!" she blinks and raises a hand to her head as she looks at Odo with wide eyes. However, those eyes swiftly begin to narrow into wrinkles as she smiles and then laughs aloud, realizing just exactly how foolish she must look. The gnomish priestess pauses in between peals of laughter to stick her tongue out at Odo and say, "Meanie!"

As she settles back into her seat, she asks, still chuckling, "How do you feel?"
Hope and Glory - by Haruchai on 16:46 28 Feb 2005
Though it makes him look almost bestial, Dimidius smiles and nods. "I will carry myself proudly, Aust." He picks up his mask and looks at it, then at Aust. "I would ask, however, that you let me wear my face."

Once he has Aust's answer, the moon elf sees a drastic change in Dimidius. Aust has a good guage on how an elf ages, and knows that Dimidius must be close to his own age, much too close in age to be his son, yet the half-breed doesn't seem to mind. He simply seems elated that, for the first time in his life, he has been accepted by another elf.

Dimidius takes off his gloves, and Aust is able to see that the knuckles on his hands are bony and pronounced, and it is evident he has used those hands to practice his melee arts his whole life. His shins show the same build-up, his body having become used to the rigorous training he put it through.
Hope and Glory - by Takeshi M.F. Kovacs on 17:55 28 Feb 2005
Aust chuckles and says, "My son, you are an adult grown...what you wear is no one else's concern but your own.  My main concern was not what you wear, but the attitude with which you wear it.  Since you have promised to hold your head up...we can begin the teaching!  Now, the elvish word for mask is...(insert fluffy  sounding word)."

As the trip progresses, Aust points out trees, rocks, etc. giving the elvish equivalent whenever possible.
Hope and Glory - by Haruchai on 18:36 28 Feb 2005
Dimidius places the mask upon his face, but does discard the heavy black cloak he usually wears. He listens attentively as Aust points things out to him, and the moon elf notes that Dimidius is like a sponge, soaking in everything he says and does.

The carriage ride proceeds thus, with the two elves upon the carriage roof, talking and forming a bond of friendship, while Widget, Katherine and Odo keep one another company. After a time Algreth wakes, then Redge. The barkeep is a bit upset by the fact that he has probably lost his inn and tavern, but Algreth points out that he did escape with his life.

Algreth takes over driving for Isys after a time, and he continues to drive late into the evening. At about 10pm you can see, in the distance, lights that indicate a city or town is near. Algreth then asks, "Would you like to proceed into the city tonight, or in the morning? I doubt that Lady Dianna will see you so late tonight..."
Hope and Glory - by DeadpoolNakago on 09:41 01 Mar 2005
Retaking his responsabilities, Odo allows Katherine to select her own quarters before issuing his preferences.
Hope and Glory - by EvilLuke on 13:26 01 Mar 2005
During the day, it seemed as if she didn't not mean to eavesdrop as Widget did, but actually didn't realize it was an option. She paid no attention to the elves above her, and only slightly more to the people inside when they weren't talking to her.

As they are asked for their opinions on the city, Katherine frowns slightly annoyed at the lack of welcome from this so-called 'lady' who demanded her presence, "Well, if it means nothing to see her tonight, then we can still enter town to prevent a night of...camping..." she says with some disgust.

"We could go into town and then meet with this supposedly important person in the morning."
Hope and Glory - by Haruchai on 21:14 01 Mar 2005
At Katherine's comments on the matter Algreth nods and continues on towards the town. As they approach it becomes apparent that this is more of a well fortified keep-city than a true town. The baron has been busy, it seems.

Isys' eyes move over the guards at the heavy gates as the carriage approaches, and before she can say anything one of them calls out.

"Good to see you again, Isys! Lady Dianna is awaiting you and your party. She said for you to come to her straight away."

Isys nods and calls back, "Thank you, Captain Morgan."

The carriage comes to a stop as the gates open, then a large portcullis raises to let them pass. Algreth gets the carriage moving again, and Isys motions for Aust and Dimidius to join the rest of the party in the interior of the carriage. Isys hangs on the side of the carriage, much as Aust had earlier, as she speaks to them.

"I am sure that Lady Dianna wants to speak with you this evening. I am also sure that you'll all be given quarters suited to your stations. The baron has extended a welcome hand to you, and I would respectfully ask that you be on your best behavior."
Hope and Glory - by Takeshi M.F. Kovacs on 06:55 02 Mar 2005
Aust chuckles, "Ok.....I will refrain from stealing the silverware.  Just this once!"
Hope and Glory - by Arislyn on 08:07 02 Mar 2005
Widget smiles and nods, "Of course." However, most of her attention, at this point, is taken up peering past Isys at the city they are entering.
Hope and Glory - by DeadpoolNakago on 11:49 02 Mar 2005
Quote (Haruchai @ Mar. 01 2005,18:14)
The baron has extended a welcome hand to you, and I would respectfully ask that you be on your best behavior."

At the mention of thier best behavior, Odo looks directly at Katherine, well, more like looks down on the human female, but he thinks everyone understands what he is implying.
Hope and Glory - by EvilLuke on 15:38 02 Mar 2005
Katherine pointedly ignores Odo's look as she nods regally at Isys' words, "I would be glad to once more be in the company of those of equal station. You may tell them that Lady Katherine Black accepts the invitation wit much joy and expected camaraderie."
Hope and Glory - by Haruchai on 17:29 02 Mar 2005
Isys smiles sweetly at everyone and says, "I thank you. Your behavior will also reflect on me a bit, if I am to be completely honest."

Algreth waves at the guards as they pass, and the men who wave back seem friendly enough. Their half-plate armor shines a bit in the light from the lamps that have been lit. Each man seems to wear a longsword on his hip and several also have crossbows or longbows at hand. The on you pick out as Captain Morgan waves as you pass, one foot propped up on a bench.

The small cityship that is before you appears well kept, and the streets are well maintained. People seem very friendly, and wave as the carriage passes. Shops are open, as well as the taverns, which is a bit more different than what a few of you are used to, since most businesses close at dusk. However, the most prominent feature is the massive, fortified keep near the center of the city. You can also now see the River Vesper, and the bright lights of the larger city of Calaunt just before it.It seems that the baron didn't move too far.

The carriage approaches the keep, and again a large gate is opened for you. You see no guards at stationed here, and Algreth drives the carriage into the large barbican which greets you. It is after you're under the cover of the barbican that the defenses are much more apparent. Soldiers look down at the carriage through grated murder-holes, and you can see cauldrons of heated pitch ready to be poured through the gratings at a moments notice. Algreth waves at several of the guardsmen, who wave in return, and the carriage is soon out of the outer defense of the keep and into a rather lovely courtyard.

Several men in half-plate greet you as the carriage comes to a stop, and they are not unkind. The carriage has stopped next to a large open area of plush, green grass. The main entrance to the keep can be seen nearby, and you can see a few men on the turrets. A young man, dressed very well, and seemingly very well-groomed, appraoches you and bows as he introduces himself. "My name is Baelind Crowley and it is my greatest honor to meet each of you. I am to show you to your quarters, and to personally make sure that each of you has whatever you desire that is in my power to provide you. Hot baths await all of you. A hot meal is being prepared as we speak, and the Lady Dianna would have an audience with you if none of you object."

Baelind pauses for a moment, waiting to see if anyone speaks.

Aust bows at the waist, "Manners dictate that I introduce the ladies first, but since I just met them and do not know their full names, I will let them introduce themselves.  However, allow me to present my son, Dimidius Liadon."  He gestures at the shy elf at his side.

"I am Aust Liadon, at your service!"

Aust rises from his bow.
Hope and Glory - by Arislyn on 09:46 03 Mar 2005
Widget steps from the carriage and pauses, wondering just exactly what is going to be expected of her. After all, she isn't quite used to all the pomp and circumstance that will, apparently, be the norm here. Mentally, she shrugs. She may not know all the etiquette involved, but she does know how to be polite and that should suffice.

While Aust introduces himself and Dimidus, Widget quietly slips her toolbelt back on and slings her pack over her shoulder, ready to carry her things to her room once this meeting is done. And, therein lies the greatest mystery. Why have we all been snatched up from a random inn and carried to a house of royalty?

After Aust finishes, Widget moves out from behind the taller elves and smiles, "Hi! I'm Widget Nacklebell. Pleased to meet you."
Hope and Glory - by DeadpoolNakago on 10:17 03 Mar 2005
Odo patiently awaits an introduction from Katherine before giving one himself.
Hope and Glory - by EvilLuke on 13:35 03 Mar 2005
Lady Katherine nods her head slightly as is proper from a noble to the highly ranked servant of another noble of slightly higher rank. "Lady Katherine Black, at the service of Lady Dianna. A hot bath would be very welcome indeed."
Hope and Glory - by DeadpoolNakago on 13:44 03 Mar 2005
Seizing back the spotlight from the fair lady who also fails to mention her companions, Odo drops into a deep bow for the others before mentioning, in an eloquence and refinement unknown to half-orcs,  "Sir Odo, paladin of Tyr, and adopted son of the noble Cnut family. Traveling companion of the fair Lady Katherine.
Hope and Glory - by Haruchai on 17:09 03 Mar 2005
Baelind smiles and bows to each of  you in turn and says, "It is my greatest pleasure to meet all of you, and I have heard great things about deeds that you have yet to accomplish." He extends a hand in the direction of a large pair of doors and says, "Please, follow me this way. Your things will be taken care of for you if you wish. Just leave them in the carriage if you'd like. There is plenty of room in each of your quarters however."

Baelind then starts walking towards the doors, which are opened promptly by the guardsmen. You follow him inside, and are greeted by a spacious open area dotted with overstuffed chairs and several fireplaces. Braelind leads you down one side of the room and gestures to a side hallway which has several doors. "You may pick any room that you wish." he says, and there is an odd twinkle in his eye as he says this. "The bathhouse is at the end of the hall, and I am sure it will accomodate each of you nicely. Please, make yourselves at home, and I will return shortly to bring you to supper."

Baelind bows and leaves you to your own devices.
Hope and Glory - by Arislyn on 17:20 03 Mar 2005
Since Widget already has her things ready, she simply follows Baelind as he leads the group rather than putting her pack back in the carriage. It seems silly to her to have someone else do it when it is just as easy for her to carry them...

Softly, she whistles in appreciation at the grandness of the main room. Posh. Any area this size back at her temple would immediately be snatched up by one of the priests to use for larger projects. The place would be strewn with metal and gears, tools and sawdust...a place of bustle and ingenuity. Only the smaller rooms are used for such comforts as this.

"Thank you," she smiles and says to Baelind once he has finished speaking and is ready to leave.

Turning back to her companions, she shrugs and says, "Anyone have a preference?" Even as she speaks, she makes her way down the hall and stops at the first door she comes to, pushing it open to see what the sleeping quarters look like.
Hope and Glory - by Haruchai on 18:38 03 Mar 2005
Widget opens the door to the room, and is greeted by a very cozy scene. The room is about 15'x15' and holds a chest of drawers, an armoire, a full-length mirror, and a bed. The bed is about 4' long and about 3' wide, just right for her. However, what grabs her attention the most is a long work table along the western wall, only broken by the doorframe she is looking through. Upon it is strewn a countless array of gears, various sized tools and several books.
Hope and Glory - by Haruchai on 20:49 03 Mar 2005
Katherine moves to a door which suits her and opens it as well. Inside she is greeted with a very opulent room. A soft, canopied featherbed is set near one wall, beside which is a large dresser and a full-length mirror. An obviously antique armoire is set against another wall, and a large, stout chest sits at the foot of the bed. A writing desk sits near the armoire, and several sheafs of parchment, as well as bottled inks and quills, are readily available.
Hope and Glory - by Haruchai on 20:53 03 Mar 2005
Once Katherine has chosen her room, Odo chooses his. Opening one of the doors near Katherine's room the half-orc can see that though his furnishings are a bit more simple, they are much more fitting for him than what he is used to.

A large, metal-framed bed, some 8' long and 5' wide, is the first thing he sees. The frame is supported by massive logs, and a firm, feather-downed mattress is supported between the rails. A large, rough-hewn dresser and an equally large chest are also in his room. There is a full-length mirror near the bed, and an empty weapons rack set near the door by the wall.
Hope and Glory - by Haruchai on 20:56 03 Mar 2005
Aust opens one of the remaining doors, and can see that his room is similar to the others. A soft bed, big enough for two, sits at the eastern wall, along with a chest of drawers near by and a full-length mirror. A large chest sits at the foot of the bed, and its flat top holds a variety of locks.

There is also a small writing desk, complete as Katherine's is.
Hope and Glory - by Haruchai on 20:59 03 Mar 2005
Dimidius is last, opening the door next to Aust's. His room is the simplest, with a singe-sized bed, armoire, and dresser. There is a strange, many poled object in one corner. This room is also the best lit, with the objects in the room sending out shadows in many directions.

There is no mirror in this room.
Hope and Glory - by DeadpoolNakago on 09:43 04 Mar 2005
Looking at his room, Odo thinks, Well, so be it. Atleast it seems furnished for someone such as me. This must be a place where they keep VIPs and their bodyguards.

Not one to waste time in order to relax, Odo sheds his armor and places his shiled and flail in the weapons rack before dressing himself in a simple white silken tunic with Tyr's symbol printed on the right breast. Some leggings, a few simple accessories, becuase one can never know when an over-cloak may come in handy, and the brutish prophet is bedecked in garb that looks slightly comical for a half human such as himself, if only his visage were not so intimidating.
Hope and Glory - by Arislyn on 11:56 04 Mar 2005
Wow! This place is perfect! Comfortable and lots of room to work... the gnomish priestess grins and immediately moves into what is, obviously, meant to be her quarters. She pauses for only a moment to think, I wonder how they knew I would pick....eh, duh! Divination. She chuckles quietly to herself.

She casually tosses her pack upon the bed, figuring that she can take the time to put away those things properly, later. Her tools, however, are carefully laid upon the workbench.

I wonder if I have time for a bath before dinner and the meeting? she thinks. I bet I do if I make it quick....just a ten minute scrub, no soaking or anything.

Quickly, she begins to paw through her pack, pulling out the spare clothes she brought. Unfortunately, Widget had absolutely no idea she would be meeting with anyone important on her trip. Thus, her clean clothes are just as plain and utilitarian and the ones she currently wears.

Scooping up a pair of sturdy, deep brown, linen britches and a white shirt, she darts out of her room and towards the end of the hall where Baelind indicated baths await.

Aust changes into something clean.  He waits for their host to collect them.
Hope and Glory - by EvilLuke on 15:40 05 Mar 2005
Katherine directs the servant carrying her things to deposit them near the foot of the bed. She walks around the room opening all the drawers, the armoire, and generally inspecting everything. She nods pleased and dismisses the servant with a wave, "Thank you, you may be about your duties."

As the servant leaves and closes the door, Katherine opens her baggage and begins to remove clotehs less fit for travelling than her already sumptuous attire.

Within ten minutes she is fully decked out in her noble finery, though the jewels are relatively modest in comparison to what she would keep at home.

She looks at her self in the full  lenght mirror, Well, it will have to do...
Hope and Glory - by Haruchai on 15:51 05 Mar 2005
After having given you enough time to bathe if you wish, and change into something more suitable, Baelind returns. A soft knock is heard at each of your doors, and Baelind greets you politely in the hallway.

"Your meal is ready and waiting. Please, follow me." He heads back out to the greatroom, and leads you across its expanse to an arched doorway. Just beyond is a room that could only be described as cavernous. The ceiling is high and vaulted, and adorned with hanging banners bearing different heraldic symbols and coats of arms. The rooms has many beams along the ceiling, and several pillars rise from the floor. There are three enormous fireplaces, big enough for even Odo to walk into, one on the west, one on the east, and one on the south wall. Also along the walls you can see various paintings, each tracing the lineage of the barony. As you look at them as you walk past, you can cleary see the Pytan surname affixed below each one. The latest painting of the current baron, Renthar Pytan, is of a good-looking man who seems to have a regal look in his eye, but the look of one who does not look down on others. He appears to be in his early forties, and his hair is just beginning to gray at the temples. His face appears weather-worn in the painting, slightly different than most nobles, you would think. He is clean shaven, and of athletic build.

Multiple tables, skillfully sculpted from stone adorn the room. Some of the tables have benches of carved wood, and yet others have simple chairs. Baelind takes you to the head of the room, the side closest to the kitchen. You can tell as the smell of the food grows stronger. This table has an array of fine chairs, all exquisitely carved from different types of wood.

Widget's chair is the easiest to pick out, and Odo's is no different. The chair for Widget is as tall as the others, but a built-in ladder of stairs has been ingeniusly designed into the back of the chair. It is carved from ash.

Odo's chair is wide and very stout, the frame braced with wrought iron, though the seat and arms are plushly padded. Odo's chair is carved from oak.

The seats for Aust and Dimidius are very similar, and are a bit less wide than Odo's. They are intricately carved from yew.

Katherine's chair would seem the most regal of the various seats. Hers is carved from cedar, and is finely padded.

Braelind bids you to sit and as soon as you have done so he rings a small bell close to the center of the table. Immediately servants enter the room from the kitchen, bringing with them a selection of different foods. More than you think you might be able to choose from.

There are two sides of beef, one smoked and one roasted. There is a ham, some smoked herring and some baked cod. There are jacketed potatoes, sweet potatoes, sweet onions, corn, various greens, and dark rice. There are roasted almonds, cashews and chestnuts. An assortment of apples, peaches, pears, and grapes. There are also several beverages to choose from to wash it all down with.

There is Aleeian wine, fermented from grapes deep in the woods of old Cormanthor. A rare find indeed. There is Pulsch Brown ale, brewed by the famous Rookrub halflings. There is a keg of Dwarfhead Stout. There is also a liter of gnomish Golden Light.

The servants arrange several carts around your table, setting the items of food upon them and then waiting for everyone to make their requests.

"If you would prefer to serve yourselves, then please, do as you wish." Braelind says, smiling. "The Lady Dianna will not be joining you for your meal, but assures me that she will join you shortly thereafter. Please, eat your fill."

Hope and Glory - by Takeshi M.F. Kovacs on 13:38 06 Mar 2005
Aust adds a genuine "Thank you for your generous hospitality.  Please allow me..."  He holds Isys' chair out for her, so that she may seat herself.
Hope and Glory - by EvilLuke on 15:14 06 Mar 2005
Katherine pulls out and pushes in her own chair, for, when lacking the comforts of a personal servant, it is rude to commandeer one when others may not.

She eats delicately and mostly with her fingers. She takes only small bites and sips of the finest wine at the table. She talks when spoken to, but otherwise has nothing to say.
Hope and Glory - by DeadpoolNakago on 09:36 07 Mar 2005
Odo can't help from making a few sounds as he fights to move his giant, heavy, chair. Though trying to keep his dignity about him, the rustle that eminates from his taking his seat could be quite embarrassing if it wasnt for that fact that he has the stature to intimidate others into ignoring the commotion.

While seating at the table, Odo tries to keep himself in a perfectly gewntlemanly fashion. Though not as taken with mannerisms as Katherine, Odo none-the-less remains quiet as he chews his food, remembers to wipe his mouth with a napkin, never drools, and generally keeps his elbows off the table and his back straight.

Certainly these are all mannerisms and actions that need not be addressed if it were not for the fact that Odo is a figurative and near literal 400 lbs gorilla, and he is well aware to remain at his best behavior lest he be served with the prejudice that most humans have for his species, and that is something the paladin of Tyr will have no part of.

As he eats the food, he does interject with each new course of victuals, This is quite splendid and of commendable quality. I am quite thankful for this wonderful meal.
Hope and Glory - by Arislyn on 11:17 07 Mar 2005
As Widget makes her way around the table to her seat, she pauses beside Aust. Without asking, she reaches out and lays a hand upon his forearm and quickly whispers a healing prayer. Looking up at him, she smiles and shrugs, “Sorry about that. With the rate at which things have been happening, it slipped my mind to take care of your wound before we got to the table. I figure you’ll have a better meal without dealing with a sore shoulder.”

When she reaches her chair, Widget can’t help but exclaim, “Neat!” as she inspects the built in ladder. Running her hands across the wood, she leans forward to inspect the craftsmanship and finds herself very impressed. The joints are flush and firm, the wood is as smooth as silk, and there are even tiny, barely visible carvings along the edges of the steps, indicating the crafter’s creativity and talent. Blinking, she looks up and realizes that she’s probably spending far more time enjoying the chair than is proper. Widget clambers up to take her seat, and smiles a bit apologetically at everyone.

During the course of dinner, she speaks with the others, making small talk about little things. She has no doubt that there will be more than enough serious conversation later, so why not take this time to simply get to know everyone better?

Aust flexes his arm and smiles at the gnomette...

"Thank you, Miss Widget!  My shoulder feels much better!"

Dinner proceeds smoothly, and everyone finds something to their liking and is able to eat their fill. After they have eaten and are sitting, talking and drinking, Baelind approaches them again.

"After such a meal, Lady Dianna is sure that you're ready for your audience. If you would fallow me back to the greatroom, she will see you there. You may bring drinks if you wish."

He leads you back to the greatroom, which isn't far. In one large cushioned chair is seated a lovely woman, robed in fine silks and cloths. She is dressed in blues, purples and golds, and her skin is a  dark brown. A massive headdress gives indication of her station as an archmagi, and two beautiful, bright green eyes sweep over each of you, seeming to look through the very fibre of your being as they merely pass over you. A staff, the top of which appears to be manufactured of some strange scintillating metal, leans against the corner of the chair, and she places a hand upon it as she rises from her seat, bowing slightly in greeting. A great honor.

"It is my great honor and privilege to meet each of you." she says, and her voice sounds like a strange melody as it reaches your ears. She smiles, and indicates that you should sit, and that is when you notice the other seats pulled up, in a semi-circle about hers.

Hope and Glory - by Arislyn on 08:29 08 Mar 2005
Widget bows in return, bending at the waist as a man would. To curtsey in pants would just look silly. Besides, the gnomish priestess isn't even quite certain that she could pull off a proper curtsey. Does it matter exactly how it is done or do you just sort squat....gracefully?

"It's a pleasure to meet you, ma'am," she says.

When Dianna indicates that they should sit, she takes the nearest seat and makes herself comfortable. As she settles in, Widget looks at Dianna with bright eyes, wondering whether she should just ask the questions she wants to ask or wait for the Diviner to initiate the conversation.

What exactly is all of this about? What was this dream we all had? What was that undead thing we fought? How are we part of all of this? And why, exactly, should I allow myself to continue to be part of this?

Sighing inwardly, Widget decides to hold her tongue, even though she is overflowing with questions. Dianna will proceed at her own pace and, should one of her questions not be answered, then she will ask.

Soldierly, Odo salutes and bows before the Diana, his metal making all sorts of a ruckus, but the large half orc tries to maintian his composure once again, rigid in the entirety of the proceedings les the be thought of as anything less than an acceptable human, and an acceptable noble at that.

Though, regardles sof the woman's coming monologue, Odo has his own questions and conjectures he would liek to bring up. Most assuredly, this is some foul deed being perpetrated that requires his attention, and his association with Katherine has thankfully brought him to this fine location to dispense righteous justice, though, what are his "employer's" thoughts on this matter only she knows. Though, he muses, if she thinks differently she'll have to do so without her enterage.

The thought of Katherin begging like a small frail girl for his help makes him smile inwardly.
