Well, in the midst of updating my webpage today, I managed to do something screwy to the editor I had been using, Arachnophilia. Now, I love this program. It's simple and easy to use, but I have apparently discovered its one flaw:

When using Find/Replace, don't ever type in anything longer than the boxes you are given. When I did that, the boxes stretched out to the point where the "Find" box disappeared and even after closing and reopening, reinstalling, and taking all references of the program out of the registry (that I could find), I still can't get those boxes to come back.

Unfortunately, with as many pages as I have, F/R is essential to my editing needs. So, I went in search of a new program and found something called First Page 2000. It's free and looks like a great program. It offers different levels of complexity for people who are at various levels of experience. You may want to check it out.

Ari, excellent find!  Free is good - we like free. :)  This looks like a real good one.

If anyone, like me, needs a WYSIWYG type editor, I have been experimenting with Composer the editor that comes bundled with both the Mozilla and Netscape browsers. Both browsers and Composer are free.  I have been surprised at how nicely it has worked.  So Composer is my new default.

I am kind of curious - what HTML editors are you folks using and how do you like them?

i played with the latest java version of arachnophilia and may set it up to do my php and perl programming in eventually.

for everything on the web including programming and html and just doodling i use editpad lite. and poking around at the website i no longer see that version available .. it has the multi-tabbed windows, a nice multipage find and replace.

i haven't used a WYSISYG editor in years and years and now that i'm using .css more typing time is less an issue anymore. i've really bought into the css page building. changing the look of a site through one simple style document is just the right thing for a lazy fellow like myself.

I think people would do well to use a text based editor like Ari pointed out or Arachnophilia.  But folks like myself who are chronically HTML and design challenged a WYSIWYG editor gets you in the door to web design.  But it is a very good to have both.   I recently had to edit the chat page at Planet Doom.  The old discontinued and malfunctioning java chat room had to be replaced.  I could not open that page in Composer without it crashing.  So I had to open it in a little free text only editor: Taco (Mac only), in order to edit the page.  So it is a good idea to have both.
