Sorry Star Wars, but 2001 and 2010 get my vote because they are more interesting.

Heyas Captain,
Yeah, I have to second that: 2001 is the best in my book.

A lot of action sci-fi films today are boring because they are often overrated and overused.

If I had to pick one SF film to be stuck on a desert island with I'd pick Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Is it the greatest? Well I suppose it is for me, though I recognize that both 2001 and Star Wars have been far more influential on the genre. If I were going to turn off my own just sheer emotional response and try for a legacy vote, I'd have to go with 2001 as the greatest SF film ever.
Personally, my favorite film of all time is a western. "Once Upon a Time in the West."

Wrath of Khan is on my short list for top 3. Easily the best Star Trek film, IMO.

I believe we are all in painful agreement about the greatest movies. It is the order of our top few that we might quibble about.
2001
Star Wars
ST 2
Blade Runner
and hmmmm. I need to think about #5
MoonHunter
Sage, Gamer, Mystic, Wit

Personally, my favorite film of all time is a western. "Once Upon a Time in the West."
While that is a good film, Rio Lobo is my top western, followed by the Magnificent Seven. I mean those are westerns that people who don't like westerns like.
Hmmmm. Does Tremors I count as a sci-fi film or horror film? I mean it is aliens, but they are monsters. (I am personally blocking out any of the other movies that might of been made in that series). If we think it is sci-fi, it is my movie #5.
Scariest Movie of all time: Seven I mean this movie had people wailing and weeping and staring in blank disbelief when I left the theater.
Best SciFi of 2002? Was there a good Sci-fi film in 2002?

This is a few years old now but I have a top 40 list for the all time best scifi films. It was before the remake so "Planet of the Apes" refers to the original.
It is just impossible to actually put things in order from best to worse for titles. I never got around to making a Fantasy list or a horror list. I would be hard pressed to come up with 40 fantasy movies let alone call them "best".
Anyway here is the list:
http://planetdoomportal.searchking.com/top-sci....st.html
Please note that my childhood favorite "Tobor the Robot" is not on the list. Ergo the list is probably fatally flawed.

Magnificent Seven fav Western. Followed by most of the John Ford westerns.

Best sci-fi flick ever....*ponders*
Go ahead and brand me a heretic, but I didn't like 2001 or 2010. *shrugs*
*grins* And, I think I'm about to dig myself even deeper when I say that the original Dune is most likely my fav. I'm not even going to try and back it up with whys and wherefores. I just like it. So there. Nyah.
As far as Seven...*shudders* I hated that film with a passion. Not because it's a bad film. Not at all! It was very well done. Too well done, in fact. I left it feeling horrible. I refuse to ever watch Seven again. I can honsetly say that I have never seen anything that made me have such a strong, negative reaction before. When I see a film, I want to walk out feeling good. I'm afraid that I'm one of those people who go to see movies for mindless entertainment. If I want something deep, I read.

If tremors would be considered SF, and I suppose it could be in a broad sense, then I'd have to list some movies that I really liked that are mostly horror or horror/thriller but with SF elements. And these would be:
1. Alien
2. Aliens
3. Terminator 1 and 2
4. Predator 1.
But Topping all of those would be John Carpenters "Thing," which was really great. The original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" is also high on a list for me.
As for Seven, I thought it was really good, and it did creep me out. Like Arislyn, I tend to go to movies for mindless entertainment and if I want depth I read.

Brazil; It was the first movie that I really enjoyed, but I do not think I will watch again, like Seven.
IT would be on a top ten list of my favorite SF (not San Francisco) movies.
There is a good mumber of SF cross-over material, in that the SF is either a story element or set piece. It boils down to how much they are speculating and how much they are blowing stuff up

Hmmmm ..... if we can consider Brazil, then why not Young Frankenstein?
Personally, I would have to vote for Blade Runner as #1. It seems to be very difficult to take a Sci-Fi book to film. The only Sci-Fi movie I've ever seen surpass the book was BR. Which is amazing since the book was incoherent and had severe printing errors.
Sorry folks. I know I'm in the minority here, but IMHO 2001 is not even on the list (the book stunk - the movie was stunkier). (I raise my sturdy bumpershoot to ward off the storm of brick-bats and rotten vegetables
)
While Seven is technically a Horror film, I personally classify it as Just Plain Disgusting.
As for #1 Western (or even #1 All Time) it's a tie between Once Upon A Time In The West and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I just can't decide ...

I have not seen Seven so I can't comment.
Blade Runner was excellent. I'm not going to say it was the best but it is in the top ten. A lot depends on subjective criteria. Hard science fiction may not appeal to some so they would rank it lower.
I would make the case that Star Wars is barely science fiction, space opera or otherwise. Star Wars is just as much or if not more fantasy than it is SF (the other one).
Dune, I liked the movie, loved the books but I can't put it at #1 despite the recommendation of The Heretic.
