Firefly: new Fox TV scifi show - by CorellianRogue on 01:29 27 Aug 2002
I just saw promos for the new Fox scifi show, Firefly.
From what I saw, it looks like a combonation of Farscape with a touch of Red Dwarf thrown in. The commercial really played up the humor and "unlikely crew" scenario.
The official website describes a science fiction show set 400 years in the future following a war. The Serenity and her captain and crew adventure amoung the border planets of a seemingly hostile "Alliance," the galactic government.
The show premiers Friday, September 20th on Fox at 8pm/7c.

This is by Joss Whedon creator of Buffy tVS.
Thanks for posting this reminder, I am going to get a calendar and chart all these shows lest I forget. I'm going to give this one a try since I don't need cable.
ADDED:
I figured out how to set up the event calendar for the board. I'll explain in the Members Lounge.

Good find din. Nice interview.
This sounds like it is well worth trying.

Whedon uses "Stagecoach" as an example in the interview. But it also reminds me of the basic setup of "Rawhide": a group of people travelling from place to place and getting involved in a different story and situation each time.

Star Trek was supposed to be kind of like Wagon Train so I guess the western tradition in SF is being upheld with Firefly and the comment about Stagecoach.
I finally saw the previews and it looks pretty good. Will have to try and catch it.

Well my first impression is that I was not overly impressed. Cliched. And the acting was bad too.
And why are they running around with lever action guns? If I wanted to watch a western I can watch a real one from back when they made them the right way. Just make a western.
I will give it a few more chances but it looks weak. IMO.

I agree. I'm keeping an open mind, though. I actually like the premier of John Doe better.
As far as the wierd disparities in technology, it got me thinking of the odd technology mixes in the world today. I keep thinking about the Amazon natives, living in mud huts and wearing loin clothes (if anything at all), who have solar powered computers with satellite uplinks. It's not too far-fetched to have a crew of an interstellar cargo ship using sawed off shotguns. Well, maybe a little far-fetched...

Yeah, I am reminded that the whole first season of Buffy was only so-so. It took them that long to really figure out where they were going.
With that in mind I will give Firefly the same concideration and watch the whole first season to really give it a chance. That seems to be par for the course in scifi TV.
Besides, I gave up cigarettes, whisky and chasing wild-wild women so my Friday nights are pretty free these days.

I actually like the premire of Firefly. Like all Joss' show, they start to slowly unfold their plots. In the tradition of Babylon 5, STNG (hmmm bad example), and other shows, they take the long term/ series-book view rather than the TV/episodic view of cramming everything you need to know in the first 60 minutes-and losing most of the non-fen (the bulk of the) audience in the process. If you are going to judge the book by its cover (first episode), there is probably not enough there to hold you. Hopefully you have more attention span than that.
There is an overarching plot (that they did not club us over the head with), and each character's basic personalities and hinted interpersonal subplots. The characters look like real people, each with their own story. The universe is not a happy universe, gritty, real, and kind of ugly. It is science fiction with a slight cyberpunk touch. The introduction/ opening credits explained the technology gap between what is achievable and what is available (kind of like the real world where hi tech exists in some places, but people are still living as their ancestors did). I liked the strong visuals.. combining the Asian, the Western/ frontier, and the hyper tech (but that is just a cool graphic element). The theme song extened the Western theme, but hey it could be worse... it could be the Enterprise theme song. I also liked that there were other languages. No universal translator and everyone in the universe does not speak English. It is not Star Trek, but it is a heck of a lot better than most of the SciFi Drek to hit the airways.
I am not sure the series will be a "mega hit" like Buffy or Angel, but I think it will go for a few years.
What I want to know is when they will make an RPG out of the world. It may not be a hit show, but it would be a cool rpg background.

Okay Moonhunter, they redeemed themselves with this episode a bit. At least they didn't auger into the ground.
*spoilers*
The pop psychology as to why the "rescued" settler would turn violent seemed mighty thin to me. However, it is not much worse that some of the techno-babble of other scifi shows. This is space opera, you need someone to go cannible and suddenly be able to take out trained soldiers with a knife we can do that.
What the heck -- I could nitpick but I was still entertained anyway, in spite of it all.
So I'll string along with it and see where they go.
It did take till almost the end of the whole first season for Buffy to start getting really good. You are right Whedon takes awhile to get going.

I enjoyed the episode. I'm starting to have a good feeling about this series. But that almost always means "cancellation" in the future

The more i watch the more i'm enjoying . the individual show plots are not fantastic, fairly standard .. but the character interaction is getting more and more interesting . the acting is stepping up too
.. watching the crew getting questioned was a nice insight into how they are .. Jane stonewalling while the scenes cuts away to them searching his quarters, which is full of weapons .. was nice .. the pilot going on about how hot his wife was ..
it is little things like that which really add up over the course of a show.

It is pretty much what I expected. Lots of character development and enough action to keep us admused long enough for the bigger plots (both meta plots and interpersonal ones) to unfold.
I do like the fact that the ship has no weapons and that energy weapons do not exist. But that is just me.
This hybrid of West and Sci-Fi is occasionally a little hard to wrap my head around sometimes.. but I think it will make the show totally unique and very realistic (for its type).
Anyone else have thoughts?

This episode #3 was excellent. I agree with you Moonhunter, I have a hard time wrapping my mind around the blending of western and scifi. It is also very North American centric I wonder how that will play in foreign markets? Whedon does like blatantly blending genres.
BTW: bullets made today are self oxidizing. They will fire in a vacuum. I don't see any reason why a space faring society would change that in the future. Just a little techno fact.

Speaking of premieres, I caught the opening episode of "Birds of Prey" tonight. It was actully fairly decent. Very much of a comic book feel and the dialogue was "young, hip, and rather silly," which often seems to be the case to me. But it wasn't bad. The jury is out on the acting abilities of the woman who plays the daughter of batman and catwoman. I wanted to like her and she looks good in her costume but....I don't know. she was very stiff.

Hi Kainja,
How about starting a new thread on Birds of Prey. The title of that thread might catch somebodies eye.
