Girliest game ever

Even though I've had FFX2 for about a year now, I finally got around to starting to play it this weekend. The first thing that struck me about it was the sheer girly-ness of it. It oozes estrogen....and I can't decide whether I like that or not.

I'll be the first to admit that I am addicted to the sort of games where I get cool loot. I want imposing armor and weapons. I want magical scrolls that call down firey doom upon my enemies. I want glowy, zinging technical gadgets that blow big holes in whatever happens to be near them.

With FFX2, I get something called "dresspheres" which let me change outfits mid-battle a la Sailor Moon. Of course, with the outfits come cool abilities but still....That, and as far as I can tell, I don't get new weapons and armor. Rather, I get "accessories". Right now, my team is all decked out with earrings, tiaras and rings. Yes, I know that said accessories give my characters nifty extras but....but....tiaras? Gah! So....girlie!

And the fact that the whole thing starts with a pop music scene ...bleh!

*sighs*

Oh, I'll keep playing. I'm not far into the game, I'll admit. Besides, even if the game is heavy on the estrogen, I still actually find it harder to play than FFX simply because the battles happen in real time. You don't get to have long pauses to figure out what strategy you are going to use. Well, you can take the time, if you want. However, every second that you take to contemplate is another second the enemy gets to pound on you without you retaliating. So, to be fair, it is more of a challenge than FFX, to me.

Hehe! I'm just having trouble getting past the whole "dressphere" thing...

LOL!  I just snorted coffee through my nose!   :D

Ari,

What happens with the male characters?  Do they suddenly have girly dresspheres and come out wearing bling-bling? :(  Or is this a girl only game?

Also, realtime combat has to be hard.

*chuckles* Well, the male characters have either disappeared or moved on to other things. (You do know what happened to all of them, but I won't spoil the story for those who may be playing FFX.) The team now consists of only three female characters: Yuna, Rikku and Paine.

That is part of why the included dresspheres. While my initial reaction to the whole Sailor Moon-ish way in which they change clothes was to roll my eyes and groan, it's still a cool idea beneath it all. You see, those three characters can become any class that you may need and switch those classes in the midst of battle.

For instance, say you are up against a huge monster that is taking no damage from magic. You have your mage switch out of her "mage clothes" and into "thief clothes" or "healer clothes" or "warrior clothes" or whatever and poof! she is that class. Now, the character's proficiency in any given class depends on how often she uses it. As you play, you earn AP, just like you did in FFX. However, that AP is applied while you are fighting to increase your skill in the current dressphere you are using. So, there's no accumulating points and distributing them later. Rather, the skill increase are real time, too....sort of.

Real time battle is definitely hard in this game simply because you have "cast times" just like you would in AD&D. So, you could have your healer see that your warrior is about to kick the bucket and you have her begin casting a heal spell. However, in the midst of that, one of the monsters switches targets and takes out your healer...which leaves you with the choice of using a potion to try and revive your healer, switch out another character to "heal mode" (both of which take time and the monsters aren't stopping to let you do it in peace!) or just have your warrior and thief continue sans healer and hope for the best. And, of course, you don't get to weigh your options for long as your warrior needs to be healed quickly....or else your thief is gonna be mighty lonely fighting that monster!

Will you stop dissing Sailor Moon!  Some of us don't have such refined Manga tastes as you.

Okay, okay...I'll give you that the actual show itself isn't that bad but Sailor Moon herself is the suxxor.  :p

I am much relieved.   :D

I dunno....I think I would actually like to see Auron do the whole dressphere thing. Have him show up and be all blinged up and sparkly....Hehehehe!

If you want to see what Auron actually looks like, you can copy/paste the addy into your search bar. I tried to link directly to the webpage (not the image itself) but they apparently have some code in place to keep people from stealing bandwidth that automatically bumps you back to their main page if you link to the image page.
