I was trying to think of my favorite horror book titles and kept drawing a blank. I have read a lot of horror but it's though to pick out favorites. Here are just a few.
Books:
The Shining
Movies:
Something Wicked This Way Comes - not classic horror but I put it in the horror category
Exorcist
Yours?

My favorite horror novel of all time would probably be a tie between Peter Straub's "Ghost Story," and "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson. Also in my top five I'd put Stephen King's Misery, The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris, and Midnight and Phantoms by Dean Koontz.
As for movies, The Exorcist was certainly scary when I watched it as a young lad. Alien was scary, though it's a mix of SF and horror certainly. John Carpenter's "Thing" was good. I tell you, though, the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" is about as good as you can get for givng you the willies.

Oh yes "Invasion of the Body Snatches" the Orig. is great. Good call on that. It was tough to watch that as a kid. Night of the Living Dead was excellent.
Koontz's Whispers was really good.

Another very little known movie that gave me the creeps, even when I was in my late 20s, was something called "eyes of fire." This group of people come upon this valley in the forest that is tied in with native american magic. Really an eerie movie, though I've never met anyone else who has seen it.

In reading horror, I would also mention that I've liked a lot of James Herbert's books, particularly his, "The Dark."

I know I've read some Herbert but I'm not sure what it was. I went through a period were I would devour paperback horror books, so I've read many but a lot are a blur.
That is not a knock against horror. When I had time for serious reading I would at least finish the horror novels. Fantasy books have about 160 pages to catch my interest or I just set them aside and never pick them up again.
It's just tough sorting through it all to find a gem.

Brad, if you're looking to try Herbert I'd suggest "The Dark" or "Sepulchre"
