Fantasy Worlds - by Kainja on 13:21 04 May 2003
The following quiz was recently published in The Illuminata newsletter.  I thought some of you might enjoy it.  I have three more quizzes upcoming in future issues, about fantasy heroes, famous movie monsters, and SF worlds.  Hope you enjoy:

The Answers are at the bottom but DON'T cheat now.

========
Are you a fantastic genius?  Or maybe just a genius of the fantastic?  Do you know the history of far worlds and of the strange creatures that inhabit them?  Can you at least match the authors on the left with the worlds they created on the right?  The answers are on page xx.  Twelve or more correct should make you preen like a barbarian who has just sacked Rome.  Eight to eleven correct is an excellent showing but you took some wounds during the sacking.  Four to seven correct means you’ve still got the wall to scale.  Below four?  I’m afraid the Romans have won and you’re destined for the arena.  Hope you like lions.

1.  Stephen R. Donaldson               __ Ghandor

Answers:  1. The Land, 2. Kaldar, 3. Llarn, 4. Almuric, 5. Tschai, 6. Ur, 7. Skaith, 8. Newhon, 9. Kregen, 10. Barsoom, 11. Janus, 12. Amber, 13. Magira, 14. Ghandor, 15. Gor.

Ok, that didn't work.  Let me try again with this post:

Score = 5.  Those were the only authors I was familier with too.  Ack.

Let's see, Brad, if I can guess which ones you got right.

John Norman and Gor
Edgar Rice Burroughs and Barsoom
Roger Zelazny and Amber
Stephen R. Donaldson and The Land
Andre Norton and Janus

I'm pretty sure about the first four but the last one could be Robert E. Howard and Almuric.

You are right on the first 4.  #5 was Fritz Lieber and Newhon.  Not because I read more than one short story of his, but because he used to write a column in Locus Magazine and somehow the info stuck in my head.

I should have gotten Andre Norton since I'm a fan of her books, however I read most of her stuff probably 10 years prior to all the others and time has dimmed my memory of them.

This is neat, because I now have a list of more authors to check out.

Brad, you should definitely check out Robert E. Howard.  He's written a lot of great stuff, including the original Conan stories, of course.  I'm in a group called REHupa, which is the Robert E. Howard United Press Association.  We put out shared magazine about Howard from within the members of the group.  He's one of my favorite authors.
