I ran across this article today and thought that it would be appropriate to post here. (I'm afraid the site is set in frames, so the link goes to the article page instead of directly to the article. It's called "Experiments in Low Pressure.")

What it deals with is one of the greatest problems that I feel online games face: the disappearing player. It's not that there is anything necessarily wrong with the game or style, it's just that things come up in real life that keep us from the computer such as sickness, the PC breaks, vacation, work or even just good, old RP burnout.

Unfortunately, when characters/players disappear, this can often leave other players hanging as plots come to a screeching halt. This article deals with some easy ways to set your character up so that they always have a reason to flit away from town for a bit, should the need arise.

Might help to note the article is dated 07-07-2004.

Sounds like something we coulda used with Palskanes storyline.  For that matter I guess I could also have posted Callon's "Jump" much earlier than I did, with my internet access waning to the degree that it had...such is life.
