Dream phenomena - by Kainja on 23:34 28 Mar 2004
I had a very interesting sleep/dream experience this morning.  Quite freaky.

I thought I’d awakened and noticed from the corner of my eye that the sheets where my girlfriend normally sleeps were stirring.  This was strange since I knew she’d already left for work.  Then a human shape formed under the sheets and began to writhe toward me.  It wasn’t quite like I was seeing it but more like I was feeling it, or just glimpsing it from the corner of my eye.

I realized at that point that I was still partially dreaming and that the shape wasn’t real.  It was still kind of freaky as the shape got close to me.  I knew if I turned my head I’d see it and that it would be terrible, but I didn’t move my head.  I strained with my arms to try and break free of the sleep paralysis and it felt as if they had lifted from the bed, although I suspect they didn’t.

The thing under the sheets grabbed me, one hand on my shoulder, the other around my lower arm.  I could feel its grip--it seemed to have long fingers--but there was no feeling of heat or cold.  I strained for a moment longer, and tried to use my mind to keep the thing from coming closer to lean over me.  I started telling myself to just relax, that it wasn’t real, and as I relaxed the paralysis broke and I opened my eyes, although it had seemed that they were open before.

Kind of cool actually.  Has anyone had anything similar happen to them?

I haven't had anything quite like that, but I did have one that had be questioning whether or not I was actually awake. :)

I dreamt (though at the time it felt real) that I had awoken and was thirsty. So, I slid out of bed and stumbled to the kitchen, not bothering to turn the lights on. When I got there, I got a glass down from the cabinet and filled it from the tap. Now, the kitchen window was right over the sink. So, I looked out the window as I lifted the glass to drink. As soon as my eyes lifted, I saw something awful and horrible, a monster, staring back in the window at me.

(I should mention, at this point, that that was always one of my fears growing up. I would NEVER sleep in a room without closed curtains for fear of something creeping up and watching me as I slept.)

This scared the bejeebers out of me, I screamed....and woke up.

"Whew!" I said to myself. "Just a dream. Hmmmm....come to think of it, I am a little thirsty."

So, I slid out of bed and headed to the kitchen where, upon looking up from the sink, I saw the same horrible, nasty monster looking in at me.

I screamed and woke up....and went through the same process a THIRD time before I finally wised up and stayed in bed! *laughs*

Pretty freaky!  I kind of enjoy nightmares strangely enough.  It's the most thrill you can get for nothing.

I always hated walking up and looking out windows in the dark myself for fear there would be something staring in at me.  For some reason I always imagined a mandril baboon face.

I used to have very vivid nightmares like you described Kainja, but it was a long time ago.  While I am aware that I dream, nowadays I rarely remember what the dream was about and nothing gets that scary or even that interesting anymore.

Ack, I'm in a dream rut!   :p

My dreams and nightmares WERE more vivid when I was younger, but then I went through years of focusing only on work and my physical dreams seemed to retreat into the background and lose a lot of their intensity.  In the past year or so, when I've begun to think more of things other than work, my dreams have once more started to increase in intensity.  It's been quite enjoyable.

The phenomenan of feeling paralysed and becoming aware of a human shadowy form, and then feeling the weight of the figure pinning one down, is a classic one.
Normally when one wakes up our muscles wake first and loose the paralysis that keeps us safe while we sleep.  Then our mind wakes up.  Sometimed one's mind will wake up before the body has lost its paralysis.  This paralysis panics us, but why this is sooooo often translated in to a shadowy figure is unknown, but widely documented.
The feeling of beeing weighed down may be due to the brain attempting to get feedback from the muscles about where they are and what they are doing.  I cant remember the official name for this phnomenon.....Ill try to look it up.
