Does anyone out there actually like this game?
A high percentage of gamers are Trekers or trek fen (even if they don't like to admit it). We all want a good, strong, Star Trek game. What do we get? Drek! Is there something in the Paramont license that requires any RPG or CCG product using the license to SUCK? Is this a case of you get either brains or money.. and given the price of the ST license... Money is notable. Thus the suck factors of the games.
Are there any redeeming qualities to this game? Did they not think we would not notice that this is just a 2d6 version of d20 with a slightly modified experience system (which.. if applied to d20 works really well) and some controls on feats? It is not even a good d20 rip off. They should be required to have an OGL for d20 listed on this game.
</rant> opinions?

*shakes her head* I wish I could give you an opinion, but I've never tried the Star Trek RPG, mainly because I've never heard anything good about it.

MoonHunter,
Can you be a bit more specific about your dislikes? The reason I ask is that I was considering buying this when I order the Lord of the Rings RPG (whenever that comes out.)
I understand that they use the same core system so I am curious.

My issues with the game are several fold...
First: The system is basically d20 with 2d6. It has classes, prestige classes, feats, and such just like d20. They just call it something else. In fact some of the text has the same feel as the original d20 text. The combat is not d20, but skill based. Advancement through experience can easily get out of hand, as there are no checks and balances on advancement.
second: The classes and subclasses for Trek are tightly defined.. almost too much so. So if you have a planetary science officer, you won't be functional in ANY other area of science. The classes also limit what "feats" you can take. They also limit the ability to take any skills other than class skills. So if you want to be a scientists who is not a push over in a fight, it becomes incredibly expensive and you can't take any feats related to that area. The prestige classes are also tightly defined and quite limited. There are SOOO Many classes and prestige classes that it is easy to get lost in the minituia.
third: They crammed every series into ONE book. So we end up getting Talaxians or Ocampa race write ups.. instead of Andorians and Romulans. The equipment seems to concentrate on STNG to Voyager... ignoring (except for phasers) STOS and Enterprise. The same is fairly true with the ships. Unless you are going to do a lot of work... this game is going to need splat books for each campaign..era...
Forth: They also did not give you any real guide for creating new races, new ships, and other things. Again I see the need for splat books.
Fifth: They have declared that there won't be splat books.. that you have everything you need in the two books.
[[catch 22]]
The mechanics of the game system are not bad. The experience system could even be adapted to d20. The LotR game should not have the focus of classes that the Star Trek game has. So it should be better than the ST game.

Classes and skills are hard to do in complex societies. (The more technologically advanced a society the more one tends to specialize. Hence everything gets done by "teams.") It might work better for LOTR.
I have heard almost no buzz for the ST game. Sounds like it will sink without a splash.
They are crazy if they ignored TOS. That sounds like it is marketing driven.
Thanks for the lowdown. I'll skip buying it.
