Would you get one?

Here was the dinner topic between the hubby and I this evening: Would you get a cybernetic implant if you had to make a serious sacrifice to do it? It pretty much goes without saying that if it was a life-saving operation that you would or if it enhanced you without a sacrifice that you would. However, let's say that you had the opportunity to get an implant that would remove the sight in one of your eyes but allow you to access an internal computer, would you do it?

In that specific instance, I probably would. I find myself in front of the computer all the time with my left eye closed. I never really notice it for awhile, but open it to type, then go back to one eye open to read. Isn't that odd? I bet I look pretty funny.

Anyways.... what's this internal computer like? Can you upgrade?  :p

But seriously, I suppose I'd have to take each offering on a case by case basis. Weigh the sacrifice I'd have to make in relation to what I'd gain. Make sense?

Here's another one: Lose all of your hearing (a large loss, but not insurmountable), in exchange for the physical strength in your arms of ten men. (Bionic arms.... ).

A lot depends on the context of society.  If you really need the ability to jack in to a computer network in order to function in the society then it might be worth it. (Although eyesight is not something I would part with for any price.)

Reminds me a bit of some of the cyberpunk books I love.  The Murid series by Effinger.

See, I just can't bring myself to part with any natural piece of myself, for any amount of technical saavy. Like you said, Brad, if you needed it to make a living...well....*ponders* I still don't know that I would do it. It's just so unnatural. The idea of being part machine seems a bit creepy to me.

Well hey! That's cool! You're already creepy, Ari! But, it's a cute creepy.... :p Just joking!

Actually, I'm creepy, so it makes perfect sense.

*fades back into the creepy shadows*

I read a cyberpunk book somewhere (forget the title) where people went to storefront parlors to get scaly snake skin, vampire teeth or whatever cosmentic surgury.

I was going to take that a step further and have a whole subculture of people that were slowly turning themselves into cyborgs and they saved up enough money.  So like getting a tattoo for a regular person, these folks would get their natural arm replaced by a cybernetic arm.  To them it was like both body art and a fetish at the same time.  Some people could only afford cheap K-Mart cyborg gear and some had expensive custom built stuff.  And etc.

I never wrote that story but it was fun world building.
