I'm doing an essay on public perception of archaeology, and I was wondering if you could all tell me the names of any real or fictional archaeologists you can think of. Or even if you can't think of any! Its so I can discuss how people perceive archaeologists based on who the most well known ones are. I have some theories about who they will be!!!!!

Real - Schleiman(is that how you spell it) - the excavator of Mycenae who said "I have gazed on the face of Agamemnon", even though the death mask was not from Agamemnon's time at all. Didn't he also dig through nine incarnations of Troy to find the one from the period he wanted to investigate. He had a great instinct for dig sites, just wasn't to disciplined or scientific in his approach.
Fake - Indiana Jones, more tomb raider than archaeologist.

The only archeologist I can actually name is Dr. Rast who was one of my professors at university many *cough*25*cough* years ago. I'm afraid I don't remember his first name.
I should know more, I keep seeing them on History Channel.

Shoot...I can't remember the names of any real archaeologists. The only fictional one I can think of is Indiana Jones.

Lol, thats interesting!
The Agamemnon Mask guy comes up a lot, and yeah, he did destroy many later versions of troy attempting to get to the layer which would correspond with the stories, but he didn't find it - either he destroyed it by digging through it, or later building levels built through it.
Indiana Jones comes up most, even with actual students - when we go on field trips every single undergrad tends to turn up in an Indiana Jones type hat! (Interesting fact - they gave the actual hat and whip to my Uni, and instead of keeping them, they sold them to pay for the new labs!!!)
Its surprising that the ones I'd think of as most famous (Lord Renfrew, Mortimer Wheeler, Flinders Petrie, Kris Lockyear, and the fabulous Ian Hodder) just aren't on the public scale at all!!!
If you think of any others, and the reasons you know them, please do post!
In fact, even the sites you've all heard of would be interesting!

I did "Classical Civilisation" A-level (thats the studying we do between the ages of 16 and 18) so my archaeological knowledge is very confined to the Mediterranian. We mostly studied the Mycenaeans and Minoans, so the sites Im aware of are the palace at Knossos (inspiration for the labyrinth myths) and Mycenae, Pylos & Tiryns.
Obviously I am also aware of the valley of the kings.
Oh and Pompeii and Herculaneum of course, how could I forget.

I wish I could have done classical civilisations! In Scotland we take highers and advanced highers (kind of like AS, the A2, but more complicated) and classical civilisations doesn't even exist as a subject! The closest I got at school was later modern history - which translates as spending five years studying the Weimar Republic. Waaaarrrggghhh!!!!!!

Years ago I read some good books about archeology one was about the Koster (sp?) Indian site in Illinois. It was interesting because it was more about micro scale archeology - sifting through dirt for ancient fish scales to see what the diet was of these people since there were no stone buildings.
The other books were about excavations done on the Hopewell? Indian mounds in Indiana, Ohio, Illinois etc. That to was facinating.
