It was with horror that I saw the news this morning, that 17 years almost to the day since Challenger blew up we'd lost another shuttle.  I can't imagine what those 7 men and women felt when, if for even a few seconds, they knew they were surely about to die.  I hope, at least, that it was brief.  I feel for those left behind whose grief will not be so short.

I don't think the human race should retreat from space.  I think we have to go on, and that we have to know that such things are a dangerous business.  But for the moment there is nothing else to do but weep.

COLUMBIA

They went across night,
Phaethons all,
stabbed like meteor flame
through the great silence
that sucked up the sound
of the engines.

Who could have known,
that not in cold black,
but in the wild blue,
higher than the mountains,
the angels of the chaos
would steal their dream.

In the sound of fury,
against the hammering sky,
they rode the hand of god
until it released them
to fall like stars,
seven brave stars.

and so they came down to earth
and so they came home

one last time

I have been following the Space Program ever since I was a little girl. When I knew that it was taking too long for NASA to receive a response from Columbia, I knew something was up, as I knew something was up with Challenger when the same thing happen to her. My prayers are with all.
