Captain Scarlet - by Brad on 17:36 23 Apr 2003
As a child of the 1960's I have fond memories of Gerry Anderson's "Super Marionation" shows. I dimly remember Fireball XL5, and like many kids of the time I was a huge fan of Thunderbirds.
Anderson did another 32 episode series, "Captain Scarlet and the Mysterions" in 1967. This one I missed completely. It is the darkest of all these puppet shows and the one that reflects the Cold War era the most.

I just picked up the box set at the local DVD store. I'm looking forward to watching these.
I understand this was played on re-runs on the SCIFI Channel. Did anyone ever see it? What are your thoughts?

During a mission to Mars in 2068, agents of earth's Spectrum security force start an interplanetary war when they demolish the ancient city of the Mysterons, an invisible race with the ability to assume the form of any object or person they destroy. I thought everyone had seen Captain Scarlet!! It's one of those shows that gets repeated quite a lot over here. It's quite Dark but what with him being all indestructable it isn't always that tense. AND they keep having to make up elaborate reasons why he didn't blowup/bleed to death/suffocate etc. and that can get a bit silly. But I do love Captain scarlets ever present stubble which shows he is a man on the edge!

It is my favorite of the supermarionette shows. Thunderbirds seemed like an excuse to sell cool non japanese toys when I was 9. Fireball never got any play around here. So Captain Scarlett was the best humans vs the alien forces show next to Ultraman. It had plot, characterization, and enough action to keep people from 8 to 28 paying attention.
Remember that the Captain frequently died, but got better quickly. He was also vunerable to the same lightning weapon they used to kill Mysterions. (It was implied that he was a mysterion, but when the alien took on his form he took on Scarlet's implacable will and dedication... becoming Scarlet). Very cool all around.

I'm glad I bought this then. It never played around here. In fact, I had never heard of Captain Scarlet until I was poking around Barnes & Noble looking for Anderson's "UFO" series. There is was in his credits and I had never heard of it.

I've never even heard of Captain Scarlett. I must have lived a sheltered life. Well, in fact, I did. I grew up in the Bible Belt and a lot of things never made it into that area because of the nature of the material. That is, it was weird and imaginative. I never saw Doc Savage or The Shadow or The Spider pulps until I was grown.

I got bored last night and watched the first episode. It makes some plot leaps that kids would not mind but adults might find difficult. That is pretty standard for Gerry Anderson programs though. Despite that I enjoyed it immensely. It is darker than all the other shows and greatly entertaining. I love seeing the scale model sets.

I'm now watching an episode a week. What a fun series. I love looking a the scale model sets and the detail that went into them.
This episode was the first in which Capt. Scarlet did not "die" at the end of the episode.
I get a kick out of seeing what they considered ultra modern buildings in the city models.
In many ways this puppet show was way ahead of our time: showing peoples of many different races all working in an integrated environment. Not something you saw much of in the mid-1960's. And women flying jet fighters would have been unheard of.
