The Story: Woohoo! After 20+ years of not having cable television, I finally broke down and ordered satellite TV.  So as of late last week I now have SciFi Channel and a few others.

The Question: But I have no idea what science fiction, fantasy or horror shows are running on cable channels and which ones are any good.  So I am starting a list of shows to try out.  So far I have "Dead Zone" on USA network written down.

What other cable SF shows do you folks recommend and why do you like them?

Dead Zone - I saw this for the first time just a few minutes ago.  I thought it was very well done.  I'm not sure it falls in the scifi realm but it is definitely speculative fiction.

Anyone watching Dead Zone?

I haven't seen that. I may have to see if I can catch it.

*ponders* I wish I could offer up some suggestions, but between WoW and the fact that Blockbuster finally got rid of late fees, about all I've been doing is playing and watching movies. TV programs have fallen by the wayside...and what I do watch is either anime or shows you are already familiar with (Lost, Stargate, etc).

I'm going to check out Star Gate Atlantis tonight.  I'm a little bummed that the original Star Gate conflicts with Star Trek Enterprise.  :(

I haven't watched Stargate Atlantis but I do like STargate SG-1 a lot.  I also find THe Dead Zone series to be well done.  One thing I haven't much cared for on Sci-Fi is their "sci-fi original movies."  a lot of them are pretty lame.  I am keeping up with Battlestar Galactica and am enjoying it so far.

I did watch Star Gate Atlantis.  I think it might take awhile to grow on me. At least I will give it several more weeks.

USA  I dont know what is being aired for you, so the following may not apply.
Im not really in to SG Atlantis, even though I liked the original Star Gate.
I quite like Dead Zone too but I only watch it when I happen to be flicking and it's on.  It's not just about his visions, but there is also the awkward relationship with his ex-fiance and her husband (his best friend) and the child.
The Invisible Man - not to be taken seriously, but if you like liquid metal special effects and a bit of a laugh it's OK.
Battle Star Galactica - You know I like this, but it might be difficult to get in to if not watched from the beginning.
Kingdom Hospital - Well made and freaky but as I had no idea what was going on I didn't watch too much of it.  Again it's based on Steven King.
Earth:Final Conflict - I like this because it is not your classic Good v Evil.  Beings both Human and Telon (alien) have hidden agendas and political squabbling.  Some of the acting is a bit dubious (strangely it's those playing the humans that are more OTT), but the longer you watch it the better it gets with longer story arcs becoming apparent.
Quantum Leap - Im sure you know this brad, but Dr Sam Becket stepped in to the Quatum Accelerator...and back in time.

Thanks for that list Noonchild!  I'll keep an eye out for those.

I'm kind of curious as to what channel in the US will show the new Doctor Who, I would like to try that when it comes out.

I've not heard much about this other than they have asked Paul McGann to do it, I suppose after the success of the TV film where he played the Doctor.  I thought that film wasn't too great, but I like Paul McGann and I am hopeful that a series would be less reliant on big special effects and more reliant on good story/script.  The Tardis in this film was also all wrong - I hope they improve on this.

New Doctor Who I haven't had a look around yet.  I did hear that they had successfully negotiated the use of Daleks for the new series with the estate of Terry Nation, their creator.

I do imagine we will get the series in the US sooner or later and I will certainly give it a try.  Just a matter of figuring out which channel it will appear on and when.  :)

The Paul McGann rumour was obviously false - someone got confused with the film.  Chris Eccleston is a good actor though, so Im quite glad he's gonna be in this series instead.

SciFi Channel was playing StarGate SG-1 episodes back-to-back last night (I think these were reruns.)   The episode I saw was pretty good.  I think I will keep watching these, I kinda like the show.

This is good to know because I have no idea who Eccleston is!  :D

I really hope so, there is a saying that the quality of Doctor Who as a show is higher the cheaper the sets are. This was the beauty and charm of the old BBC shows - wobbly sets but good scripts and acting.

I'm watching more reruns of Stargate SG-1 and I am enjoying the show.  However I've been trying to watch Stargate Atlantis but it is leaving me cold.  Anyone else not warming to Stargate Atlantis?
Cable SF TV Shows? - by Kainja on 18:47 05 Feb 2005
I've only tried to watch two episodes of Atlantis and couldn't get interested in either one.  The characters just aren't interesting to me.  On the other hand, I tended to like Stargate Sg-1 from the beginning.

Agree on the characters in Atlantis.  I think the characters, scripts and acting are several notches better on SG-1.  SciFi seems to play a lot of reruns of SG-1 so I should be happy watching it for a long time.

Atlantis leaves me cold too.  Unfortunate as I liked the look of the Wraiths in the trailers.  They put that one scientist guy character that we have met before in SG-1 in to Atlantis, I guess to give us something familiar, but he is so whiney that what was funny in SG-1 is just annoying now.
