I just ordered the 1930's serial Buck Rogers starring Buster Crabbe for my father.  He grew up watching these in the movies.  It is interesting that Crabbe played both Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers.

Anyway, talk about pulp, Buck Rogers started out as a newspaper comic. And got translated into serials and then got resurected in the late 70's as Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.

As I remember these serials from when they were shown on TV they were pretty good - fun.

I just finished reading an old pulp novel called Flash Gordon and the Plague of Sound.  It was really pretty good.  I was never exposed to Flash gordon or Buck Rogers growing up.  I lived in the Bible belt and we just didn't have much of that (SciFi) stuff around.  I often feel like  I really missed out on some great stuff, like Doc Savage and The Shadow, and The SPider.  I've read a lot of it since I've grown up but I don't think it's quite the same.

Watching Flash Gordon and Buck Rodgers replayed on TV when I was little, definitely paved the way for my love of the ERB John Carter books later in life.  Just as watching the old Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies on TV led me towards the mystery genre.

I never really thought about it, but TV has had quite an influence: it has both taken me away from books but also exposed me to whole genres which led me to books.  Interesting.
